LOCKWOOD LOWDOWN
LA's schoolyard of the
stars has become a fishing
pond for thieves who covet boards,
camera and video equipment. On a
recent Saturday a local thug "bor-
rowed" Sage Humphries' skate and
made all present feel uneasy. When
Sage asked for his property back the
gangster pulled out a gun and said,
"I don't want to shoot you." Sage
left the schoolyard empty-handed,
as did William Nguyen and others.
Laban is moving to the Bay Area
where he's said to be founding an
invisible company backed by the
mysterious moguls of the south.
Blockhead Dave, Tracker Larry
and Ridge are allegedly offering
guidance and insight to Laban.
Fish is functioning as a de facto
GI Joe dealer. On a recent Sunday,
our closet collector made five hun-
dred big ones selling rare combat
dolls to the rich and famous.
Dave Schlosbach and Brian Lotti
are still talking about forming a
Jesus skate company.
Which manu's team sells so much
equipment on the streets that cer-
tain major skate outlets have
had their busi
ness severely
affected? Are these im-
promptu sales part of a plot to put
the heat on certain vendors as are
irate dealer claims?
DOUBLE DEALING
Shorty Tony and World Steve
have teamed forces to open a pro-
gressive skate shop in the city of
Santa Barbara. Somehow connect
ed to this organization is legendary
Claudine Gosset who until recently
was an art director for Powell.
Call it a rumor if you like, but the
Fifth Annual Los Angeles Graffiti Art
Show, at Gallery X, appears to be
graffiti stylist Frame Gamboa ap-

peared to have been punched up
semi-seriously in the melee. The
ensuing drama seems to be based
largely on the anti-graffiti bias of the
district attorney and coast-to-coast
anti-tagging proponents. Since legal
action is pending, many will not
even admit to have been there,
including us.

Which manufactur-
er recently formed a
secret Chinese cor-
poration to build and
market skateboards?
Could it be true that
this manu is building
"new" flat decks that
are for sale in China?
These recently produced flat decks
feature the company's current US
graphics, so perhaps this is all just
another elaborate research and
development play.

THEY GO TOGETHER
Moler manned the grill while Keith
Cochrane, Don Fisher and Greg
Carroll played host. Team affiliates
such as Ricks, Drehobl, Phil Shao,
Pancho, Matt Pailes and Paul
Zuanich mixed with assorted well-
wishers including Tommy Guerrero,
Swenson, Obradovich and Jeff
Klindt. The highlight of the facility
tour was Fish's office bar scene and
his 100-gallon piranha breeding
aquarium. Cochrane's marble and
glass desks ran a close second.
Much talk centered around the new
identity of Eric Ricks, who was sport-
ing a new passport under the name
of Erick Floyd. Word was it
was about a long forgotten
birth name and legal name
status. Equally oblique was
Cochrane, who produced a
birth certificate which iden-
tified him as Keith Guzman.
Following the food and
drinkfest, the Think contin-
gent launched their round the
tour. An interesting footnote
occurred when a rival manu was
observed counting Think's on-site
board inventory.
SMA magnate Skip Engblom has
been seriously training. Last month
he worked out so hard he dropped
thirty pounds. His late night down-
hill sessions tuned him for the epic
three week swell at Malibu. The
SMA snowboard line is in the works
as reportedly is a custom long
skate cue for aquatic legend Brad
Gerlach. Gerr is presently cross
training on a mid-length deck of
questionable
charachter that

trucks of dubl-
ous design.

ROOKLE
Malibu Point
was the site of the World Jungle
team surf contest. With most of the
surf-industrial types competing,
the vibe level was often intense. The
long-standing rivalry between Surfer
and Surfing magazines stalemated i
when the Surfing mag squad didn't
even show up. Could it be that the
recent defection of Surfing team
water/concrete legend Sam George
to Surfer tipped the scales? Or was
it the purported departure of such
individuals as Gilovitch, Jimbo
Gaskin, etc? Steve Hawk led the
Surfer contingent on anyway in a
competent showing. Could a skate
mag showdown be far away? Other
drama fests included Team Tavarva,
led by Mark Price, Alan Sarlo, Jesse
Billhouse and Paul White. Price left
the Fijian isle of dreams to attend
the event and was seen training at
a North Malibu estate where the elu-
sive Griff Snyder drove him around
in a golf cart. Were they teeing off
on the sand, or are golf carts the
new way to avoid carrying your
stick? Later Price was viewed

source of much speculation at the
point. Equally inscrutable were the
Alutian designs of Dave Parmenter.
His bottom contours and outline
shapes perplexed more than a few.

Rick Ibaseta was shot at in Harlem.
He and a friend were walking when
the perpetrator told Rick to hand
over all his money. Rick said he only
had two dollars. The perp said he
wanted all of it. Rick replied again
that he only had two dollars. The
perp then whipped out a pistol and
fired at Rick at point-blank range. He
missed, but gave Rick powder burns
and a hole in his shirt.
FRIDAY THE 13th
John Cardiel took himself out of
the Euro tour with a 180' to double
heel bruise in Madrid, Spain. Mean-
while, Ben Schroeder was involved
in a Stateside car accident and was
last reported in a coma with head
and back injuries.
