Venice boy Skip Engblom devel-
oped a rep early on and eventually
managed a de-facto full-fledged cus-
tom skate crafting operation. (Keep
in mind that commercial skate com-
panies didn't exist yet.) One of his
friends. CR Stecyk did full deck paint
treatments on many of Skipperboy's
cues. Personalized mayhem was
these guys modus operandi.

clean multi-laminated stick with a col
orful wave logo. Hobie Surfboards later
adopted this design with Mark's per
mission and marketed it as their own.
On 26th and Colorado Streets in Santa
Monica. Larry Stevenson started.
Makaha Skateboards. This original
oval logo was created by a local surf
rider/artist named John Van Hammer-
sveld. JVH's studio assistant was
Makaha team manager Jim Ganzer. A
Palos Verdes artist known as Rick
Griffin was one of their acquaintances.
