Skateboarding Cures Cancer
Psyche. When they finally find a cure for cancer, skaters
will have helped bring it about. Every year for eight years
now, the gang at Lambda Chi Alpha has thrown a party
where skaters from all over the country have lent their
wheels to a fund raising event for the American Cancer Society
dubbed the Thrash-A-Thon. The melee turns the campus of
Cal Poly in San Louis Obispo into a skate mecca for three days
of sweet charity.
Unlike the past, where the ramps have been smaller, this
ramp was a monster. The abuse started on Wednesday, and
(except from midnight to 7 am break) didn't stop until Friday
night. Skaters just kept showing up. Anyone could ride and
many did. Some sessions were bland while others were hot-
ter than a jalepeño. Highlights included Matt Moffet and Peter
Hewitt taking long and gnarly rides, Jason Jessee apologizing
for his skating, Alan Petersen owning it, Grosso blasting and
