GOVERNOR'S GRIPE
Government of the people, by the people and for the people no longer
applies, at least not for skateboarders on the steps of the Missouri State
Capitol. A prohibition of skateboarding on the Capitol Complex in Jefferson
City, MO, was declared after Governor John Ashcroft alerted Administration
Commissioner Jim Moody to "fairly significant deterioration of limestone
steps, sidewalks and ledges on the north side of the capitol. Bureaucratic
estimates place repair costs between $5,000 and $10,000 and total replace-
ment at $50,000 to $100,000. Parking lots, garages, and all state property in
the Capitol Complex are affected by the ban, which Moody hopes will
"appeal to good common sense." The commissioner was apparently dis-
turbed by the amount of damage that skaters wield under their wheels, and
told the Jefferson City News Tribune, "You couldn't have done that much
damage with a hammer." But members of the JC Wrecking Crew disagree.
One youngster, whose mom was not impressed by his front-page exploits,
says, "Give me a hammer and let's see how much damage I can do."
