at grover beach
kate con-
tests bring
to mind
some of skating's less
desirable aspects; big
egos, bad vibes, non-skater
corporate types acting like
they own everything, con-
test organizers running
around like beheaded
chickens trying desperately
to organize something that
needs organization, rules,
regulations, skaters on this
side, spectators on that, act
like this, think like that.
The first annual Grover
City Junkfest on August 15,
was none of the above.
After kicking us off the
beach, Grover City was
kind enough to provide thir
ty or so pro skaters and an
ample, albeit silent crowd,
with a basketball court in
which to do damage. Oh
well, who among us can
expect charity from the
society that we're eating for
lunch? The street/court
area was set in a semi-rural
residential area and fea-
tured a workable field of
obstacles that made this
whole scene smell more
like a session. Anyone who
wanted to skate the course
or move an obstacle could.
The devolution of the con-
tests looks like it could
save our species.
W
ith
day devoted to fun, the
contest only lasted about
two and half hours, with the
rest going toward a session
involving anyone who felt
like skating. In effect, the
contest was broken up into
heats of three guys, each
with a sixty second run, and
after that, a three minute
jam on the course for all
three guys together. Todd
Swank on the mic, with a
radio tuned to static, coun-
try western and gospel
walling stations. Here's
what went down: Tenth was
awarded to Jason Adams
for macking backslide 180°
ollies over the gap, late
shove manuals over the
fun box, 360° nollies and a
big noseslide to fakie on
the filing cabinet.
Ninth belonged to Oscar
Jordan. Big late shoves and
180's over the gap, feebles
on the bar and allies from
spine to lipslides were the
salt of Oscar's run.
Ray Barbee deserved
better but took eighth.
Consistently light on his
feet, Barbee's super-late
kickflips over the gap took
him to the marble bench for
nose bonks. Frontslide
shoves off the wedge to fun
box to shove-it off the other
side. Backside 360° olies
over the hip brought
Barbee back to the runway
for the over-gap, a big late
shove it. An ollie to nose
manual brought him home..
know nothing
about tomato
paste, but I do
know Tom Knox continues
to be a rider to be reckoned
with. Backside and
frontside 180's over the
gap, backside 360's off the
fun box, assorted cabinet
and desk torture ending
with a wall ride circa 1987
brought this veteran flat-
spots and seventh place.
The padded pocket
awards began with sixth
place Skip Pronier. 180"
over the gap in either direc-
tion brought Skip around for
feeble to fakies on the bar.
A nose slap on the bench.
Frontside shoves up and off
the fun box, noseslides on
the filing cabinet and a
backside 180° allie over the
hip put $50 in his pocket.
ifth place went
to Ed
Templeton. A
heelflip to manual onto the
desk not only took Ed into
the top five but nearly took
out a photographer. Over to
the wedge-hip and down
the widowmaker to a nose
manual on the fun box. A
nosegrind to the gap was
the precursor to the back-
side switchstance heeltip
Ed used to bag $75.
Simon Woodstock blis-
tered the blisters on his cal-
luses, then tortured himself
with allies over the gap to
nose manuals down the
other side. Backside late
heelflips over the hip were
just a few of Simon's cre-
ations. Thy place is fourth
and thy check was $100.
ne word
comes to
mind for
Gershon Mosley: benihana.
Other modes of attack were
olies lipslides on all desks
and cabinets, nosegrinds
on everything, nose manu-
als to shove-its off the fun
box, and 180's over the
gap. There wasn't much to
slow down this powerful
rider. He ended up with
third and $150.
Did somebody say Punk?
I thought so, because JJ
Rogers was. Three hours of
sleep in the bushes didn't
stop over the gap backside
lipslides, ollies to feeble
Smithgrinds and big ollies
to lipslide over the spine.
But the trick of the day for
JJ was his frontside slide
down the widowmaker. JJ
threw in a wallride and
onded the whole deal
with a street plant. Two
hundred and fifty dollars
were awarded to JJ to sup-
port whatever nasty habit
he feels like.

tional mindwarp skating. A
pressure flip over the gap
will only begin to transport
you into Willy's world.
Noseslide to backside
180 off on the filing cabi
net. Head explode yet? It
will. Backside 180° olies to
nose manual, one-foot
360° ollies and 360° kick-
flips over the gap, switch-
stance heel flips over the
hip. Willy was awarded
first place and $400 while
I was still groping for my
cerebellum.

Willy Santos, (below)
displays a 360 one-
footer and a shove-it
late kickflip over a
boneyard gap. While
team mate Vallely
was in the hospital,
Ed Templeton (above)
brought home the
bacon with 180
nosegrinds on the
desk. Gershon Mosley
(right) hardly flinched
when he yanked this
heaping benihana.
