story
fter driving down long
deserted roads and check-
ing the camage of a modern
civilization, we pulled into
the parking lot at the
Skatepark of Houston for
the NSA/Airwalk amateur
finals. The park has been in opera-
tion for over seven years and it has
seen better days. It was Wednes
day, August 19th, and owner Dennis
told us the NSA didn't take over the
park until Friday. So that meant we
had to pay fifteen dollars for mem-
bership and five bucks a day for the
next two days. Great. I paid just to
get the freak out of my face. We
skated for about two hours until the
sun went down, but when I asked
when they turn on the lights, they
told me they don't.
This park closed down and every-
one went to the Skatebox, another

chain smoking cigs and playing the
pool. We offered to pay the group
rate, "You know, 20 bucks for all,"
and he said, "No." So when he was
in the back swilling hot dogs, we
barged. We offered, he denied, so
he got jack. The Skatebox was the
site of the mini contest because it

With Matt Beach the newly
crowned street champ, the crowd
went back to work on the business
at hand and that was skating. The
vert dogs had an open session that
was highlighted by a head-on colli-
sion by two dudes coming down
from six-foot airs. The noise was a
muffled thud that sent one to the
hospital. Ouch.
Sunday was the most confusing
of the contest days. The Box was
first for the mini event that dragged
on for an elemity. It rained so heavy
on the metal roof that it was impos
sible to hear the public address sys-
tem. Undaunted, the comatose
crowd watched the best ams get
down and dirty on the multi-faceted
facility. It had a hip, a spine and it
even connected to a small vert
ramp. The lines were many and the
slams were by the truckload.
Ten finalists battled it out, but
when the final tally came through it
looked like this. (Continued on page 60)
