B
eyond the boneyard in a one room shack,
between hell and a hard place where he can
never go back, Rick Rotsaert spins the tunes
ahead of the pack. Tonight. Notes from the
Underground is pre-empted by The Rickter Scale.
Facepuller, Cranial Expansion Device, CD. These
Vancouver, BC shredders pulled my face off to the bone
with their blend of metal, punk and industrial ear cleaners.
Meaty... Mass Appeal, The Mechanic CD. Some of you
may be familiar with their previous works, like the Jazz Lp
which was amazing Aussie HC, but found The Mechanic
more metallish, but Brett Curota still rips the git... Dim
Stars, CD. Amazing all-star collaboration featuring Richard
Hell, Thurston and Steve from Sonic Youth, and Don
Fleming from Gumball, with full-length originals destined to
be classics... Iceburn, Firon, CD. Salt Lake City foursome
goes beyond rock, HC, metal and punk throwing in jazz,
classical and experimental. A great show live... Bloodline,
Can't Rest On The Times, CD. Metal-edged Minneapolis in-
your-face hardcore-groove anthems and it's nemesis...
House Of Large Sizes, I'm My Own Grandpa Pt II. 7. An
lowa trio with a rockin' single that has catchy riffs, great
rhythms and tempo changes... Slovenly, Highway To
Hanno's, CD. They've been around for a decade and have
re-located from So Cal to SF. Dense complexity mixed with
strange vocals, non-linear guitar/bass interplay and a hom
section for a slight jazz feel... JFA. Lightning Storm, 7". It's
new, it's JFA, it's punk and it's on red vinyl... Cyanide, The
Dying Truth, CD. Slow grind that plows like a bulldozer in
low gear. Baphonet, The Dead Shall Inherit, CD,
Buffalo's finest death metal merchants. Speed, ferocity,
long-delayed and overdue. No frills... Erectus Monotone,
Erector Set, CD. I might compare some of the songs to
early Meat Puppets. Cool and unusual punk with a cover of
Blondie's "Eat To The Beat."... Sonic Youth, Dirty, CD.
Most people will think this is more consistent than the Goo
Lp. Pretty rockin', noisy and a little more straight forward...
Lungfish, Talking Songs For the Walking, CD. New on
Dischord is Lungfish, which displays more diversity for the
DC area. It's not fast but still possesses qualities that keeps
you going... PJ Harvey, Dry, CD. Good band to back her
up, noisy, bluesy. Sensitive and sexy. Give it a shot... Drive
Like Jehu, 7". I've reviewed the album in a previous issue
and gave it a Soulside feel, but it goes way beyond that stuff
...Fuckers, both 7's. Ski masks to conceal their identities,
they play drunk driving rock. Their first single was on Merge
and the new one on SubPop rips... Laurels, Burn, 7".
Rhode Island's power trio's second 7" has enough horse-
power to get down the strip in the 10.5 bracket...
Epidemic, Decameron, CD. Fresh from the Metalblade
vaults, notable speed and rage from Palo Alto, CA...
Aversion, Fit To Be Tied, CD. It took a couple of listens but
It finally hit home. Speed metal without the evil touch, the
way it used to be... Brujeria, Machetazos!, 7". Grossest
cover of the month and it's real life. Mexico's most heavy
death mongers are at it again with this second single and
It's brutal as hell itself... Alice Donut, Magdalene, 7". They
finally put something out that I'm ravin' about. Good, noisy
hooks-well, it's just a dandy single... Cadillac Tramps.
Tombstone Radio, CD. So Cal shit-kickin' rocky blues bal-
lads. My fave so far... Toiling Midgets, Son, Lp. Surreal
SF veterans that play eerie yet pounding with a subtle
chaos attached... Zipgun, 8-Track Player, CD.
Responsible for re-defining the West Coast as to how punk
should be played. Full frontal assault with one ex-Derelict
goin' off on a riff-o-mania... Youth Gone Mad, West/East,
CD. The only franchise band in the world. Half the songs
were recorded in NY and half in LA. Ena and friends bust
out some serious traditional punk... Beat Happening. You
Turn Me On, CD. A real gem. Best album yet in their ten-
year existence. Olympia is the birthplace of rock and BH
proves it with, count 'em, two guitars for a heavier sub-folk
flavor... Sugarshack, Charmer, CD. Been waitin' for this
album produced by Tim Kerr. There's a serious fuzz and
heaviness throughout the disc... The Vacant Lot, Because
They Can, CD. These NY rock n' rollers smoke some killer
high energy pop... Cheater Slicks, Destination Lonely,
CD. Australian release of my favorite Boston band these
days. Peter Bagg cover art and a garage cult classics of hits
to boot. They have a new album out plus five previous sin-
gles... Dag Nasty, 85-86, Ep. Box set has the works with
Sean still in the band. Four-color vinyl singles of their best
stuff... Brutal Truth, Extreme Conditions, CD. The next
step in grindcore, exploring regions untouched by no other.
It's like when SOD was around-unbeatable. Grinding fast-
paced frenzies with cool riffs, lyrically correct, lower abdom-
inal rot... Nocturnus, Thresholds, CD. Hailing from anoth-
er universe, Nocturus returns to teach the humans the way
true sci-fi horror metal technology should be applied...
Lawnmower Deth, Metal Bozo Clowns. CD. The place:
Nerdingham, England. Purpose: Comedy relief transferred
through deathcore grind and epileptic seizures... Kill Rock
Stars, Compilation, CD. Finally available on disc with bonus
trax. Full of bands from the International Pop Underground
convention like Fitz Of Depression, Nation Of Ulysses,
Nirvana, Bikini Kill and Seven Year Bitch... Skatenigs,
Advance Cassette. Heavy blows in that Wax Trax vein.
These guys have the killer live sets... Cannibal Corpse,
Tomb Of the Mutilated, CD. Evil in its rawest form reflecting
the world of today and striving to be the most repulsive and
sickening band to date. Not mom-friendly. -Rick Rotsaert
