here I come from in the country outside
Belfast, this guy who was only seventeen
went out and caught rabbits in the fields.
Then he went out at about 2:00 in the
morning, cut off all their heads and
spiked a rabbit's head on every car that he
could find. The police eventually picked him
up with a big bag full of rabbits' heads. You
gotta wonder what makes a guy do that." So
relates Andy Cairns, guitarist and growler
with Irish noise-terrorists, Therapy?
It's notions this repellent and extreme that
drive Therapy?'s three-man sledgehammer
sound. "People seem to think we're really
obsessed with serial killers," says Andy. And
Therapy's? US debut Caucasian Psychosis
does happen to feature a sweet lil' number
called "Dancin' With Manson." But the gui-
tar grinder denies a pre-occupation with
murder. "I don't really think so, though I am
quite interested in the idea of madness right
now. It's like in the David Lynch film Blue
Velvet, it's hard not to be fascinated with the
underbelly of society, the things that go on behind
the veneer of respectability."
Sure they're from the land of fiddles and Bono, but
Therapy?, formed two years ago in a Belfast barroom,
sounds like the mutant offspring of the US under-
ground's meatiest noisemakers, with a noisy sense of
discipline: fat, heaving rhythms and machine-gun pop
sensibilities. "All that about Celtic pride, U2 and kilts is
just such shit," laughs the guitarist. "Northern Ireland is
quite boring, to be honest, everyone's just so totally
apathetic, there's really no music scene here. We were
always more into the American bands like Big Black,
Black Flag, Killdozer and Urge Overkill. Actually, our
bassist is really into death metal."
The bottom line with Therapy? is that they're fans, first
and foremost. They're all dedicated record collectors
which might explain how familiar, yet furiously delivered
their sound really is. "It blows my mind that people like
Steve Albini and bands like Jesus Lizard are really irito
us!" Cairns gushes. "I can't wait to get to the States to
tour. The amount of record buying we're going to do will
be unreal!"
Therapy? keeps these three murderous musos out of
trouble. Guaranteed, there's an awful lot of Irish rabbits
