We're fighting a losing battle, but it's time to renew our committment to keep
skateboarding out of the Olympics and off David Letterman. Thrasher has spent
years cultivating the outlaw image and would hate to see all that effort go to waste.
Pro contests of any kind don't matter much to skaters except as a gathering point
and a reason to get up earlier than two in the afternoon. It certainly isn't the money,
but then, the Olympics doesn't hand out anything other than gold-plated medals.
Skaters are as powerful and agile as any gymnast or basketball player, as precise as
any marksman and as fleet of foot as any runner.
The trouble with the Olympics, or with any contest, is the routine, schedules,
coaches, and people commanding you what to do and when to do it. Skaters have no
problem with skating twelve hours a day, just don't tell us which twelve. Let's face it,
skaters aren't jocks. We don't get off wearing tight outfits and flexing in front of
different. stadiums full of fat ass wannabes eating hot dogs, sucking sodas and howling.
We at Thrasher have been known to throw a few contests and our criteria is simple,
listen to the skaters, get everybody together, and if it ends up one crazy session with
the locals, that's the best.
