Jugglers, rappers and skateboarders are every
where on a hot afternoon in NY's Washington
Square Park. Out of nowhere comes a slight,
disheveled street urchin with two skateboards. A
crowd gathers as the he does a demo of tic-tacs,
walk the dogs, pirouettes and toe-spins. Now that
he has an audience, he rounds up full garbage

SKATERS vs
CARL'S JR.
Skate harassment met its match when it
tangled with a group of skaters at a Carr's
Jr. in Northern California. A posse of high
school street rats were persecuted for re-
sembling another pack of marauders that
had instigated ketchup fights, spitball
battles and slammed nickels through the
bottom of salt and pepper shakers, causing
their contents to spill when picked up later.
Throughout this period, the skaters rode
nearby curbs every day and hit the restaur-
ant for refreshments. Friction soon built up
between them and the management. The
skaters claimed they were sprayed with
sprinklers, followed into the bathroom and
threatened with violence prior to the night of
the arrests.
The incidents irked skate mom Kate Ely
enough to set up a meeting with franchise
president Tom Thompson, his wife Stella,
store manager Clement, and the kids.
Everyone met at the scene, sore spots were
aired on both sides, apologies were made,
the skaters promised to behave and the
manager pledged not to stereotype skaters.
Thompson, who also owns the EMB Carfs
Jr.. said skaters were some of his best
customers and treated the gang to sodas.
After all, he said, "Only McDonalds can
treat people badly and they keep coming
back. We're too small"
