WHEEL ENVY
I've got small wheels and my friends have big
wheels. They say I'm slower because I have
small wheels. Is that true?
Brock Howe

Smaller wheels accelerate quicker because
they have less distance to roll to make one
revolution. However, once bigger wheels get
rolling, they go faster because they cover
more ground per revolution. Small wheels
are lighter and make flip tricks easier, but big
wheels last longer. I've seen people ride
66mm wheels down to 43mm, they just keep
rotating them to balance out coning and flat
spots caused by slides. When choosing a
wheel, you should weigh all these factors.
GRASS OR ASS
I can pull a kickflip onto the grass occasionally,
but when I do it on cement I land on the board
then fall flat on my ass! What's my problem?

Landing on your patoot means you're leaning
too far back and causing the board to shoot
out in front of you. Just try leaning forward
next time.
LONE SKATER
I'm a fifteen-year-old girl skater. My guy friends.
got me into skating last year, then about three
months ago, they stopped skating. Now I am left
to skate alone, which sucks dick! I don't want to
give up skating but I also don't want to be a loner
on the streets I skate. What should I do?

I looked up Idaho Springs in my trusty atlas
and I can see that it ain't that big of a town.
And if you don't have a driver's license, Den-
ver looks like quite a commute. I'd suggest
you take some of your non-skater friends and
teach them the joys of riding.

Slicks outsell painted decks two to one. It is
no wonder that everyone and their mother has
them. They don't have to be painted, so the
whole silkscreen business is still reeling from this
newest trend. The only thing that bothers me
about them is that no matter how
many I ride, most have the same
peeling problems. It usually starts
around either end and just continues
to come undone. Slicks are cool but
they wear out too fast. Companies
should spend some more research
time in finding a better blend of plas-
tic and wood. If we keep raping the
planet at the rate we are going, it will
only be a matter of time before wood.
will become scarce as well as expen-
sive. Time should be directed toward
making skates that are ecologically
correct as well as longer lasting.

thing with a little bit more class. 32.50 x 9.25,
6.25 T, 7.0 N. and 14.0 WB... Museum makes
wheels called Throw Out A Plug. A 44 size but
no hardness indicator made it difficult to know
what it was. After I rode them I figured they were
and run by one guy named Tod Featured Twig: Soul Trip deck, Mecatrons and Museum wheels.
Swank, a skater company all the way through.
Simple shapes, marginal concave and all original
graphics add up to hot boards. The Thingamajig
(painted) is 31.65 x 8.65, 6.25 T. 6.75 N and a
13.75 wheel base. My fave was the Bertha (slick)
it is 32.25 x 8.85, 6.20 T, 6.75 N and a 13.85
WB. Look for Tod and Josh Beagle to really
shake up the skate world... Etnies' nowost
shoe for the masses is the Senix. A mid-top with
hard uppers and long lasting soles make it hard
to beat. The price is a little on the steep side but
if you got the cake, ride 'em hard... Mecatron
701 series trucks are here so watch out. Tall, stiff
and heavy all add up to a truck company that
doesn't know where it is at or what's up. Inter-
esting design (Varifiex rip-off from the 70s) but
hardly worth the price... Soul Trip is a company
from Florida run by Chuck Dinkins. I got the
slick and rode it hard and heavy. A little wide and
a deep concave make it kind of classic. If you
are not into riding little flipper decks, try some
about a 97. Fast and slippery with a standard
shape, ride them and move on... John
Cardiel's slick is Sweet. Long and thin with a
short tail. I rode this Black Label deck until there
was nothing left. Kinda flexi but hella tough. Ride
it and go big," like the master. 32.25 x 8.75, 6.15
T, 7.0 N and 13.50 WB... The newest slick
model from the New Deal is the Fred Olande
Funny, but it looks a lot like the Cardiel, same
measurements except the tail is longer (6.25)
and the wheelbase (13.35) is smaller. Not as
flexi, but a hard body to be sure. Little bolts by
Shortys of Santa Barbara are all the rage, avail-
able in 7/8, 1 and 1.25 inches, they make putting
a board together easier and they last and last.
Tony Buyalos is at the helm, so a little deal from
a good skater is all right by me.
