NOTES from the underground
The only blues are
the ones in your
own mind. Yeah,
right. Tell that to
an Ethiopian. Rhino
Bucket hangs in
New Orleans.
After Europeans kidnapped the African from
his native land, enslaved him on strange
shores, raped his women, took his money,
banned his religion, banished his family to the
ghetto and his mind to abuse, the white man
stole his blues. Or at least he tried... One
thing that no one can ever copy is soul. That is
what separates an original from a fakir. Howl-
In' Wolf had soul, so did James Booker, Otis
Spann, Willie Dixon, Robert Johnson,
Elmore James, Lightning Hopkins, Son
House and Muddy Waters... "Any music
that's worth a shit has got soul, whether it's
country or blues or James Brown or whatev
er," said John Doe, on break from filming Pure
Country in Fort Worth, TX. Doe is known for
his work in X and The Knitters, and starred in
the movie Roadside Prophets with Adam
Horowitz from The Beastie
Boys. Doe also appears on the

mellow rolling sound-
track with Harry Dean Stan-
ton, Exene Cervenka and Bug-
lamp. Following the
wrap-up of Doe's latest fick
with George Strait,
about a country singer
who goes too far too fast, X will
return to the studio to record
a new album. Meanwhile The
Knitters will play whenever
Doe, Exene, Johnny Ray,
Dave Alvin and DJ Bone-
break are in the same town. "I
you're putting your heart into
your music, then you've got
something." says Doe... The deep
and tangled roots of the blues
extend further than most
people know. Any music with a
feeling of melancholy, a cry in
the night or a sad chord cut-
ting across the bullshit has
somehow been touched by the
blues. "We're white kids
from the suburbs," says Rhino Bucket guitar-
ist/vocalist Georg Dolvino. "This is our blues."
On the self-titled debut and current Get Used
To It Lp, the Bucket's blues rock so hard that
people often compare them to AC/DC. Dolvino
considers this a compliment but says, "The
same people who compare us to AC/DC are
the same people who said Aerosmith was a
Rolling Stones copy and Guns N' Roses
was a Hanoi Rocks copy. If people take the
time to listen, they'll see that there's a differ-
ence... Due to all the "alcohol, bad relation-
ships and lies told by various people," Elvis
Hitler says his Detroit-based combo "could
legitimately claim to be a blues band," except
that they play really fast, heavy and loud. On
Supersadomasochisticexpialidocious, the boys
deliver a double dose of black and bawdy boo-
gies... If anyone knows about the blues, it's
the laboratory animals
trapped in cages waiting
to die. Montreal power
funk brokers Bootsauce
dedicate a lab lament
called "Love Monkey #9"
on Bul that is inter-
pretable on different lev
els. "It's basically about
monkey testing, but it
could be about your own
personal monkey," says
guitarman Sonny Green-
wich Jr.... The blues
took a turn for the worse
when they met Hasil
Adkins, the original twist-
ed rockahilbilly with an
axe and a guitar to "chop
your head off so you can't
eat no more hot dogs." A
one-man decapitating
machine, Adkins recorded
crude and outrageous
classics like "Hunch," "I
Need Your Head" and "Do

fifties and sixties. He is
still occasionally sighted

The Wild Tchoupitoulas, Butler shares his
soul on The Blues and More, Vol. I... Yes,
they do get the blues down under. David Hole
deftly demonstrates on Slow Fuse Blues with
intense and stinging slide guitar that sings and
screams. Harp blower blues crooner James
Harman and his band have blues belts with an
emphasis on chops. Harman's latest, Do Not
Disturb, swings with dynamic riffs and driving,
swampy grooves... Chicago may not have a
monopoly on the blues, but they do brew it
thick and dark down there. Chicago, The Blues
Today, Vols - is a crash course in that
mighty Chi-town sound. Junior Wells, Buddy
Guy, Otis Spann, Otis Rush, James Cotton,
Johnny Shines and Big Walter Horton throw
down hard-edged blues that out through the
ages. The blues ain't nothing but a feeling

quite entertaining: sampling,

Brutal renderings of slow tor-
ture 360's, Supernatural,

Mass, rockers. A bit more of a
psychedelic feel, but very cool.
