Built around the fat bass lines of Robert
Trujillo and the no bullshit vocals of Mike Muir,
Infectious Grooves is a thick forest of funk and
feeling. The band rocks in the shadow of
Suicidal Tendencies, Mike and Robert's other
deal, which takes front seat over the Groove
machine. Muir says Infectious Grooves is a way
for its members to expand their expression in
the after-hours.
He explains the difference between Infectious
and Suicidal like this: "With Suicidal, we write
songs on the guitar, so now with Infectious, we
write them around the bass and don't limit the
guitars. So it's got that heavy thing you can clap
to, or you can dance to, because it's funk at the
same time. It don't make no sense, you're just
mixing things together, but it's like mixing oil and
water. They're there, but they're never together
So we try and put it together. You got that
groove element, but you also got the power."

Throughout his career in Suicidal, and now
with Infectious, Muir speaks out on his beliefs.
This has understandably caused some concern
among the rich, entrenched politician's wives
that run the world, but other people's opinions
have never dettered Muir. His staunch individu-
alism carries in the title of the new Infectious
record, These Freaks Are Here To Party. "This
is our party," he says. "We're going to play what
we want, we're going to do what we want. And
if that offends you, you're going to be offended.
Not in a sense that we're deliberately trying to
offend people, but if you don't like the way I
move, that's your problem."
Muir says his father taught him to start from
inside and work his way out, "The worst tyrant in
your life, the person that is going to do the worst
to you of anything, is the one that you see when
you look in the mirror. We all abuse ourselves
tremendously, and then we talk about how

fucked-up the world is. When the world's
fucked-up, a lot of times it's because the world
you see is your own world. When you care
about the way you treat yourself, then your
world becomes a bigger world and other things
are important. Because you want to live, and
you know you can't live with situations going the
way they are. It becomes a long term thing, not
a day by day thing."
Muir works hard with Infectious and Suicidal
because he believes in them. "Happiness is one
of those things that's constantly redefined," he
says. "Someone goes, 'Well, I got a day off from
work. They go to the beach, and they think
they're happy, but five years later what does
that really bring them? I think happiness is when
you look back at something that you accom
plished and you did it even though it was hard
work. That's happiness, that's contentment. I
think that's more important, being content."
