A Summer School Course
for Adventurous Skaters
Welcome to "Introduction to Con-
crete Drainage Facilities 50A. I'm
your instructor, HC Rippintear. This
class is a GE requirement for a BS
in Skate Culture or a Master's
Degree in Theory and Practice. I'm
sure many of you are hoping to
either breeze or suffer through this
popular electives like Lip Tricks 1A
or Careers in Coping. I'm here to tell
you it won't be easy. If and when
you pass this course, you will be
well versed in all aspects of ditches
and reservoirs, including their vital
role in skating's early history, as well
as present possibilities and future
potential. I suggest you take notes.
Securing the Area The most im-
portant element in skating a ditch or
the homework and a few stray visits
from Lady Luck should keep you
knee-deep in ditches for life.
Structure and Form One attrac
tive feature of ditches and reservoirs
is that they come in a variety of
shapes and sizes. If you can imag-
ine it, draw it, or dream it, chances
are it's already out there waiting to
feel your urethane.
Methods of Application There
are two schools of thought pertain-
ing to practical application tech-
niques: "Blazing Wheels and Bark-
ing Trucks" adherents and the
"Post-Modern Lip Trick/Freestyle"
school of thought. No one school
can honestly claim superiority over
the other, though some would be
inclined to disagree. Progressive
thinkers prefer to regard these
schools as two pieces of the same
puzzle, borrowing and sampling
from both schools.
And on that note, I will conclude
today's lecture. Tomorrow's assign
ment will be an oral report, the topic
being your favorite ditch and/or
reservoir. I suggest you go back
home, pick up your boards and do
some homework. Class dismissed.

Light Makes Right
Light is the word that rules the
industry. There was a time when
sturdy and solid were the buzz
words, now that everything is dis-
posable, right means light. A few
months ago I told you trucks were
going to be redesigned for the throw
away trend. Well, they are here.
Venture Featherlites have fired the
first shot in a war that is far from
over. The truck has been stripped of
all unnecessary metal and lowered
to the ground for minimum height.
Ventures have always been hard to
ride, but this reworked design
means they turn better than ever.
Once I rode them, riding standard
trucks felt like standing on a bicycle

32.25 x 8.75, 6.75 nose, 6.25 tail
and 13.75 base make it long and
lean with plenty in between. Julien
