The world is going to
hell in a handbasket
and it won't be long
before it gets worse.
What will kill the human race.
first? Ozone depletion, acid
rain, pollution, plague, global
climate changes, drought,
famine, floods, nuclear waste,
nuclear terrorism... It's like.
playing a game of russian
roulette and adding another
bullet every day. Granted, there
isn't a heck of a lot an individu-
al can do against multi-national
corporations who buy and sell
politicians like so many stocks
and bonds, but individuals can
control their own lives, and that
is the best place to start.
Make a stand on waste:
Don't use styrofoam. Demand
alternatives or bring your own
cup, mug, bowl or plate when
you go to a restaurant or store.

than just taking paper, alu-
minum, battles and tin cans to
the local bin, it also means
reusing things like envelopes.

• Vote: Casting a vote doesn't
just mean choosing between
two scummy dirtballs that won't
do anything once they get
elected except fatten their bel-
lies and skim money. Your vote
counts most when used to
approve legislation that busts
people who would rape mother
nature and otherwise foul the

• Study: Take courses that might prepare you for
an environmental career or at least an under-
standing of the environment. Energy conservation,
waste management (garbology), etc. are just a few
examples, don't forget biology, chemistry, geology.

Devil's Pit
A Boston area skate spot for over fifteen years, Turtles is
a serpentine-like playground that has banks, hips and benches. The
surface is soft and there are some big cracks, but the no-bust and
varied lines make it a favorite of old timers and new schoolers alike.
Named after the cement castings in the kiddie wading pool, Turtles
is a good place to spend a sunny Sunday aftemoon with friends and
family, but don't forget your board. From Boston, take Storrow Drive
out to Soldiers Field Road, it's on the right, next to the Charles River
Back in 1975, Chris Cook (above) worked
infamous Pacifica proving ground the Devil's
Pit with Ben Davis baggies, boxers hanging
and wallabies for traction. Now the Pit lies
buried under the rubble of the iron blade.
Skater-Friendly Sculpture
EMB Installation
Attention all skate dogs: EMB just got better. Avant garde
sculptor Mowry Baden added a statue called Toy Amenity
for use and abuse. "It is a refuge and a vantage point from
which to view local cyclists, skateboarders and passersby,"
says Baden. Made from steel, aluminum, concrete, found
marine objects and other matoriale, it sits in Justin Herman
plaza. Part of the work features a railslide bar for all-out ses
sions. The sculpture may soon be removed, but when art
thinks skating is cool, it's be only a matter of time before the
rest of the world agrees.
