TOM KNOX
Tom (left) is an all-terrain wizard from
the corner of the San Joaquin Valley. If
he's not placing top ten in contests, he's
probably out skating somewhere
between Bakersfield and San Jose.
Contests?
They are tun because you get to ride all kinds of different
things, but I say, fuck that,' to the whole pressure thing. For
street contests, the Thrasher ones where you can skate
without pads are cool. Jam format is best and free skating
where there is more than one skater on the course is cool
The future?
I hope people keep skating, but the way it is going now it
could be outlawed.
Tricks?
Stair action like pressure flips, and all kinds of curb tricks.
The flatground scene?
I am not into it, I would rather go fast. I can't hang doing
it for three hours.
Injuries?
Six tweaked anides, broke my arm in three places when I
locked on a mute air and my back always gets messed up.
Who are some hot skaters?
Wily Santos is gnarly and Chris Senn's pressure flip over
the whole box at Powell was unreal.
What about videos?
I have my own video camera so nobody comes down
and films me. Some friends and I go out and do what we
want. When they edit it, I tell them what I want in my part.
Skate fashion?
I'm not trying to make a fashion statement. I wear clothes
that are good to skate in. I have to go to court so I have to
have decent hair. I got arrested in downtown Visalia, some
old guy told us to stop skating, so we did, and as we were
leaving he grabbed my arm. I jerked away from him and
caled him the Civilian Patrol. It tumed out he was the Chief
of Police. The charge was resisting amrest and vandalism.
Stickers?
I used to put Jason Jessee stickers on my board, but
these days I don't put any on.
Set-up?
32 long, 9 1/8" wide (I may go to 8 7/8"), 6 1/2" nose.
61/4' tail 14" wheelbase), 46/100 Santa Cruz wheels, no
risers, cut-off bolts, Independent 156s
MAX EVANS
A twenty-year-old from Redondo Beach,
Max (right) is known for a gutsy style
and gnarly moves in street and on vert.
Contests?
It is better than before, but there are still too many ramps
in so-called street contests. They should be in a big open
area with all natural street obstacles like benches curbs
and walls. I will enter as many contests as I can this year.
Flatland scene?
It is cool, but it isn't as fun as going fast in the street.
Where?
Transitions Skatepark and Seventh Street in San Pedro
Injuries?
Broken wrist and dislocated anide
Set-up?
46.99 Buffered Tablets, Grease Belly, 149 Ventures and
no risers.
Hot skaters?
Wade Speyer because he can skate vert and street, and
Kareem Campbell.
What is wrong with skating?
Too many people are quitting instead of trying. A lot of
the older guys find it too frustrating, but I was in their posi-
tion a few years ago when vert was happening.
Family?
I live with my mom and I am an only child.
Where is skating going?
I think it will stay in the street for awhile. There will
always be street skaters and vert skaters
