NOTES FROM BABBLE ON
Kids today are in danger of becom-
ing bored shitless, there's no doubt
about it. They are also the most op
pressed, disinfranchised, restricted
group in the social order. They pay a
far bigger physical and emotional price
for the screw-ups of adults, because
they have to live with it for the rest of
their lives. At eighteen you're expect
ed to suddenly grow up, get a job and
be a contributing member of society.
It's no wonder nobody's in a hurry to
grow up. It's hard enough to be a
carefree youngster.
Still, more and more kids today sit
around waiting for someone or some
thing to jumpstart their reality. Only
one person can do that, and that per-
son is you. If you don't like what's in
front of your face, change it. Do some-
thing different after school. Skate on
the other side of the street. Go some-
where you've never been. Wear a
stupid hat. Don't skate for a day. Take
a day off. Listen to tunes. Break the
routine. Write a letter to your con-
gressman. If skateboarding is the
need, then do it. Not for the man or for
money, do it because it feels good.
An observer, recently said that
skateboarding will no longer be a ca
reer sport. The hottest pro prospects
of today may have a year or two of
prime time, three or four tops, before
injury or some new hot shoe puts
them out to pasture. Gone are the
days where a pro skater can carry a
whole generation for a decade. Most.
skaters today realize that hero worship
is beat. They put their shoes on one at
a time just like anybody else. When
skaters today see somebody ripping.
they don't stop and drool, they go out
and go off with them.
