OLD GUY
From page 43) What screaming?
couldn't help myself. On that last
day, I had the hill to myself and got
Every time I go down, I hear all in maybe two good rides when a
this screaming.
That's you, you idiot.
Wow! This was something new.
Now I knew I was having fun.
We switched off on that board for
the rest of the afternoon, him going
all the way down to the bottom and
me, making steady progress in that
direction. We walked home, me
begging him all the way to help me
make a skateboard of my own. I
can almost remember his instruc-
tions word for word:
"Get yourself a chunk uh wood,
about four or five inches wide, six
teen or eighteen inches long. (His
was cut a perfect fifteen inches, for
speed). Now go down in the base.
ment or out in the garage and find
those old roller skates you had
when you were a kid. Take one
skate apart and use a ball-peen
hammer to flatten the clips that are
supposed to hold it to your shoe.
Now nail those wheels to the bot-
tom of the board. And don't forget
to bend the nail points that come
through the other side so that they
won't stick you in the feet when you
jump on it.
"If you want to be cool you could
cut the corners off the front, some
kids even round off the front end
and paint it."
But his wasn't painted and mine
wasn't either. The point was to get
the damned thing built and get on
that hill.
Before long I was skateboarding
down the High School hill on my
own board. Seems there were three
or four people who could make it all
the way down. I never really be

down there than a lot of kids. Hell,
there was only about half a dozen
kids in the entire county even trying
that hill.
car slid up quietly beside me. I
looked over as casually as I could
with my heart in my throat and the
concrete solid knowledge that I was
about to face a cop. Only thing sep-
arating us was twenty inches of air
and a window which he rolled down
before he spoke.
What yuh doing?
You know, just kinda going up to
the school.
School's closed on weekends..
Yeah, well, you know, I just want
to go up there and see if anyone I
know is hanging around.
What's that in your hand?
It's my skateboard.
You weren't planning on going
down this hill on it, were you?
What, do I look like I'm crazy? No-
body can go down this hill on a
stick of wood. You must think that
I'm nuts.
Kids have been seen doing it.
Not me, man. I ain't nuts.
Well, school's closed and you got
no reason to be on school property.
so I suggest you leave.
Hey, alright, but first I just wanted
to see if anyone was hanging
around up there.
You got your choice. You can
leave or come with me. Make up
your mind.
Okay, okay... I get it.
And as I turned to walk away!
muttered something about there
being no law against having fun. It
was a mistake. He showed me
what the phrase, "stop on a dime"
was all about.
What'd you say?
Nothing
That was 1964. In "74 some hot-
shot business guy came out with
these cool bright yellow plastic
boards. Ten god-zillion kids bought

at all before one of us aces kicked wonderful, blow-it-out-your nose
out and landed in the grass, send-
ing the board corkscrewing through fad. But they couldn't do much with
the intersection, only to be yanked them. Push them around on the
back into reality by the sickening sidewalk was about all. No tricks or
sound of wood and skate putting anything. It was just a fad. The idea
dent in car door.
I wasn't there when it happened
but I heard about it. In brief: every
body scattered.
Next time I went up to the High
School hill there was a nervous
feeling in my stomach. Kids said
the cops had come around and said
they couldn't skateboard on that hill
or anywhere on school property.
But it was in my blood by then and I
of riding one of those tinker toys
down the High School hill, even if it
weren't for the cops, would never
have even entered their minds. I
tried to convince one of these kids
one day that we used to go down
the High School hill on homemade
boards slapped together from roller-
skates and a chuck of scrap wood.
But the guy just refused to believe
me. (Continued on page 76)
