PAY DAY
Overpaid skate stars? In a world
where pain pays, consider the logic
behind bashing the few pros who
manage to eke a living out of skating.
Brad Bowman, former pro skater
turned hairstylist, has got nothing to
do with this, being your basic hard-
working, steady rolling type. Mor-
ton deserves to be slammed, but at
least he still functions in the real
world, meaning he don't make big-time
dollar-wise. Even Jinx, creative genius
that he is, works for a living. Frankle
Hill, who has shot a potential
crossover film, still has to borrow.
money from guys like Todd Hastings.
to eat. Team manager Todd naturally
borrows fundage from someone
else. Omar Hassan made enough
for a couple tanks of gas off the
Milky Way billboards and bus
benches. Hawk scrapes enough to
pay the monthlies on two houses.
The point? Perhaps there is none.
but then again, will the New Kids on
the Block pull down $113 million for
the year 1991? Will Cosby make
only $111 mil, while Oprah and
Madonna follow behind with only
$80 million. And who can ignore
the seriously stuffed bankrolls of
"sports" stars Michael J., Super
Joe, Jose C and Jack Nicklaus?
BAD MEDIA OF MONTH
Perhaps more artful is the
Harper's Bazaar over-40 issue,

Thrasher's fave
skate publica-
tion is RAD
mag. pub-
lished in the
heart of Lon-
don. The
Chip Morton's cat toss is just another cruel past-
time for the Snake Ranch scum.
Trashmen would like to congratulato RAD
on their 100th issue, in which they don't
make big bones about their history (mainly
because most of its life has been spent as
a lowly BMX rag). But they do give great
insight into skating from that typically
twisted British perspective. The techno-tip
from the ever-informative products column
was on the cutting edge of 90s street.
freshness: "Riser pads are out, let those
shove-its spin, and don't get caught with
your wheel graphics facing out." These
guys are so product-hungry they review
new T-shirt designs. Steve Douglas'
column gives RAD an up-to-date edge
over any other foreign publication (beats
some U.S. coverage as well), even if the
rag does read like a New Deal newsletter
at times. Congratulations go to the whole
crew, especially veteran skatographer Tim
Leighton Boyce, who actually is the one-
man staff.
SHOOTING STARS
yes, it still is a live rumor. Yes, he has been
seen in Santa Cruz.
Brandon Cruz showed up on Geraldo
and Joan Rivers TV shows and revealed
to the masses what everybody already
knows: he spends most of his time skating
Glen E. Friedman now back on U.S. soil
toiling on his upcoming book entitled Fuck
You Heroes, featuring such proposed sub-
jects as Alva, Ice-T, Run DMC, Public
Enemy, LL Cool J, King Tee, Red Dog.
Constantineau, Dog Town, Black Flag.
and hanging with good friend, supermodel
Naomi Campbell.
Johnny Rad and the Eggplants head-
lined the Central in Hollywood.
Gonz now reportedly rumored dwelling in
NYC, working with his family.
Why is Chip Morton productions casting
female breasts in plaster? Is his
studio/assembly line housed in the most
famous front on Oceanside's Tremont
Street? Are the biggest movers in the surf
rag trade voraciously attempting to take
over Limpies?
Is the heir to a merchandising fortune, the
erudite Adam Spiegel, now contemplating
a career as cinematographer? As anyone
knows, he is now famously infamous.
Lester Kasal is fully healed and skim-
boarding. Also, reportedly deep into
school. Seen with Peralta in Buena Park.
Natas Kaupas is now sporting a new
cast courtesy of a recent bone graft opera-
tion in his wrist region (the result of a year-
old unhealed beef).
TOLD TALES
Following massive overexposure on the
Levis commercial, Jonah fled Thrasher in
order to "just skate and attend school."
Rich Metiver, perpetrator extraordinairo
of the mysterious eyes graphic, is alive
and well and hardly retired (as previously
reported by some of his ex-associates).
Skaters Union Wheels is his current fasci-
nation. Metiver has been very much on the
scene lately, unencumbered by previous
commercial alliances.

everything." Sign on cash register at NSA

he's okay.
Truer than true: Jesse Martinez was
seen golfing at the prestigious
Bel Air Country Club with his
$5,000 set of clubs. Even
more vivid was the sight
of Jesse locating
caches of precious
metals a la gold/sil-
