Flipping, flopping and flying,
Tony Hawk took first with his knack for pulling
unbelievable tricks while staying on board. Tony simply spun
backside 360 ollies, stale McTwists, and this full-Cab tailgrab.
Salling high with old-style burlitude and new
school technology, Stevie Caballero
tail-tapped the sky on strafing backside
aerials (inset), backside grab McTwists and
switch-stance thruster reverts. Cab's fine
lines earned him a strong second. Rollicking
water slide rides (bleed), and spectacular
spectators (below), rounded off the festivites.

apitol Burnout #2, held on May
24-25, in Sacramento, CA, was
the third NSA vert ramp event in a
row. This fact might have made the
prospect of going to Sacto on
Memorial Day weekend low on the
priority list, except that this contest.
was being held outdoors at Cal
Expo/Waterworld. The wet and wild
surroundings, along with the
hospitality afforded by the N-Men
and the hometown NSA staff, made
the short trip up I-80 to "Sack" a
pleasurable one. In fact it was a wet
dream, literally. The standard NSA
hospital bands that were issued to
all pros, teams and press types
allowed all access to the various
water slides, wave pools and
horseshoe pits that surrounded a
slippery but otherwise flawless half-
pipe ramp. My dream was rudely
awakened by two Sacto cops
standing in our hotel room at 7 a.m.
Sunday after the contest, saying.
"This is not a dream, you are being
evicted. Get up and get out fast, we
want to go eat some donuts." We
were guilty by association with
somebody who was pulling fire
alarms earlier that morning. Even
though we left with a bad taste in
our mouths, (they wouldn't even let
us brush), memories of the weekend
included: vertical trick skating by
the best in the business, a Dixieland
jazz festival at the same venue that
included good food and beverage, a
very hospitable nightclub, plenty of
extracurricular skating via the
N-Men's Pool Service and, a post-
contest, after midnight loading dock
bank party that numbered 150+
skaters. These rememberances
warmed our hearts as we drove
out of the dry 90+ heat of the big
valley and back into the San
Francisco fogbelt.
