            GUTTER TALK
The NSA/Vision
(ie Mexico Re-
vision) contest was
notable for several
reasons Cab's lines
and attitude were
unbeatable as any
one who's been
paying attention
tately could tell you
Equally interesting
was how quick and
enjoyable the short-
ened contest was
Less guys-less
time-more audi
ence interest-better
skating. But who
could hate a contest
where Molo won
the "Capture the
TWS Flag" event?
Then again, was
anybody else play
ing? Me certainly
wasn't, he was seri-
aus. Politically,
there's much talk
regarding the futur
of the NSA. R
seems certain man
ufacturers are a bit
pissed regarding
the recent non-
events in Savannah
and Old Mexico. Is
possible some are
openly considering
bailing on the orga
nization? Are other
manus eagerly plot-
ting unattractive
power plays? Best
of luck to Mr. and
Mrs. Bostick and all
concerned
How is it that all
of the freestylers
from the eighties
are ending up to be
the company men
of the ninetes? See
if you can match the
famous flatlander

BIG WHEELS TURNING
Is a top Hollywood producer trying
to obtain rights to the life story of Bill
Dorr for a screenplay?
Is Stacy Peralta skate-stunt dou-
bling for Robin Williams in Steven
Spielberg's new movie, Hook? The
security and secrecy surrounding this
film are so intense we can't yet tell
you some of the other boys who are
rolling on this one. But soon. Peralta
also managed to create, with his
crew, a skate vid called 8. Rather
than having another posh premiere,
the lads decided to send out a Spe-
cial-8 sixer and a copy of the vid to
all of their friends. Presumably,
everybody was supposed to watch it
at the same time. Curiously, guys like
Lance Mountain and Pat Brennan
showed up at fifteen or so clued-in
shops for premieres at the same
time. In another life, (does he ever
sleep) Stacy, C.R. Stecyk, Chuck
Treece, Chuck's pit bull, Mark
Hunt, Ron St. Germain, Bob-O
Kittilla, Big Keith, etc., are conspir-
ing to craft a vid for Mr. Chuck's
Dream'n album.
Omar, Blockhead Dave and Rick
Howard are going on their first cross
country tour. (Dave will drive the pair,
and the pair will drive Dave nuts.)
Are relics from the somewhat
recently murdered Earth Wave
Park/Edgewood Bowl in Hartford
now making the swap meet rounds in
Maryland, Pennsylvania and
Delaware? Are die-hard locals like
Pee-Wee outraged?
Why did the Wizard of Oz turn his
back on a lucrative career as a morti-
cian to sell skate stuff at Val Surf?
Why does Mick Jr. pretend he's not
working for Disney? Why does Mark
Richards hoard old Deano Mueller
noodles?
QUOTES
"One is never sure, and sometimes
that is the only thing one is sure of."
Skip Engblom
"I had a six-pack, but I only used
one."
Mofo
Tony made getting married cool.
Now everybody's gonna do it."

BACKYARD ISSUE 511
JULY 1983
Busting off the sidewall and over the love seat,
Jayboy Alabamy cut an aggressive ollie across the
large coping of Doris' pool to introduce the burl-
filled Backyard Issue Shred and Betty skated a
black hole and sailed through time and space to
other worlds within our own... Skate rebel Joe
McGibney announced in Mail Drop that the once
closed Colton Skatepark, a virtual bastion of
bowls, banks, snake runs and halfpipes was now
open for skating due to a hole in the fence. The
inevitable cycle of evolution was captured in a
short story by Gary Scott Davis about the life and
death of a skater in Steep Slopes. Dr. Rick
flowed a double wheeler tuck-knee frontside on
brick banks at a parking garage in San Jose and
discussed the pros and cons of Sky Hooks...
MoFo recounted a weekend of Skate Rock lunacy
involving rhino charges at Joe's Ramp, and the
music of the Minutemen, the Big Boys, Black Flag,
the Faction (with Steve Caballero), the Skoundrelz
(with Tony Alva), Los Olvidados, Minus One, JFA,
the Drunk Injuns, the Black Athletes, the Jaks
Team and a whole lot of skatin' going on Cele-
brating the backyard experience, David Hackett
powered the seminal frontside gnarler over a tall
death box at Doris' pool in Huntington Beach,
while Steve Olson cornered a frontside air, Ron
Emory from TSOL edged a boxer and Alva aired
backside... Photograffiti covered the virtues of the
Brazilian skate scene with shots of keyhole and
bean bowls, unridable vert parks and big fun at the
Campo Grand Bowl. Meanwhile, high ollie,
backside and lien action brewed in the rad ramp
territory of Puerto Rico CASL #3 featured the
hot ams of the day in a big backyard setting under
the blazing desert sun of the Palmdale Ramp.
Steve Steadham aerialed backside while Jeff
Grosso crossed the channel eggplant-style and
sponsored am winner Kevin Staab traveled length-
wise grabbing the nose... Down Florida way, Bill
Beauregard floated above the roofs of the neigh
borhood with a backside air over the Gainesville
Ramp and Paul Schmitt recounted the festivities of
the Florida Backyard Series... Further south, Scott
Edwards reported on the doings at the 3rd Annual
International Amateur Skateboard Contest of
Guatemala. Jon Harms outlined the procedures
for "How To Have Fun Skating In Missouri Even
When It's Raining Which Is Usually Only When
You Want To Skate... Pushead and Jimmy John-
son reviewed Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Merciful
Fate, Accept and Motorhead in the Metal Edge
department. Trash ran a photo of U.S. Senator
Paul S. Tribe, Jr. of Virginia applying a Thrasher
sticker to his monkeysuit and Allen "Loverboy"
Losi said, "You want to talk chicks? Hey, there are
chicks within walking distance of my house that I
can get any time that I want" Joel Chavez
pinned Don Fisher's head to the deck with a lay-1
back air over the popular ply of Lopes' ramp
