SKATING AS USUAL
Here we are in the middle of another summer skate season, ready to
roll, slide or ollie over anything that gets in our way. Every day there are
new curbs, parking lots, sidewalks and stair rails blooming where once
only flowers grew, creeks gurgled and fields of green waved in the
breeze. Geez, smell the air - bus fumes, sewage and oil fires, it's great
to be a skater living in the 90s and headed for the twenty-first century on
a wing and a wheel. Hark, is that a pool pump I hear draining the cess
out of another drought victim's cement pond? Too bad. We'll just have to
skate it. The whir of the Skil and badaBAM of the hammer means that
Tim Payne is finishing up another wild wood masterpiece. This one is in
Riverside, California. Maybe your town is next. Speaking of wood, that
mini is way overdue for a fresh summer skin of Masonite. Or maybe
you're going to take the plunge and say, "Heck with it, we're going with
the steel, baby." This year it's time to hit the road Jack (and Jill), we've
got a list of parks from here to there for you to check. Palo Alto muni
park is still hanging on despite threats to fill it if the skaters don't treat it
with respect. Columbus, Ohio has just christened a new cement bowl.
Congratulations to Carabeth Burnside and her new status as a pro.
Tony Hawk and Cindy were married and everything is right with the
world...well, at least the skating world.
