NASBA/OP PRO
JUNE MTN, CA 1/23/91
Although both June and
Mammoth Mountains in
the Eastern Sierra Nevada
get heaps more snow than
other Cali spots, the cover-
age for the June Mountain
NASBA/OP Pro Race and
Halfpipe competition on
January 18-20 was lacking
this year. Conditions were
clear and crisp-so crisp
that the icy halfpipe walls
had to be formed with the
help of a chainsaw. Andy
Hetzel and Craig Kelly
were one-two in the men's
halfpipe, with tricks like.
Hetzel's fakie-to-lipslide-to
fakie, fakies-to-aerials and
crooked cops. Kelly was
going down the line with
back-to-back 360's into
540's and Caballerial vari-
ations. Chris Roach boned
and poked his way into
third, and upstart Mike
Ranquet flew to fourth.
June Mountain's proximity
to the LA Basin also
brought out such snow-
boarding celebs as
Christian Fletcher, who
carved the pipe and adapt-
ed to the frozen transi-
tions without a prob. Bert
Lamar debuted his new
self-titled company and
extreme skier Glen Plake
scissored up the halfpipe
on skies. A closing shot
had Andy Hetzel carving
down the pipe with a rope
tied to the nose of his
board like the early snow-
board pioneers.

TDK WORLD CUP
BRECKENRIDGE, CO 2/8/91
The World Cup at Breck-
enridge usually has a more
serious air about it, due to
the participation of inter-
national boarders. Still,
that didn't stop a fully
clothed pool party at Bea-
ver Run Lodge spearhead-
ed by Shaun Palmer and
Craig Kelly. It was whis-
pered along the halfpipe
that Jeff Brushie was go-
ing to take it down. De-
spite Brushie's low profile
in practice, he did just
that with his solid side-to-
side pump and high airs
where he pulls three dif-
ferent twists, tweaks and
torques between take off
and landing. European
stand-out Bertrand Dener-
vaud gave Jeff the brush,
though, by blasting big
airs of his own and styling
a thick satch of tricks. If
he was more known by the
judges, Bertrand could
have just as easily taken
down first. Activity around
the halfpipe started out a
little slow and low earlier
in the week. The pipe
channel was narrow, steep
and tight and low airs
were the rule. They widen-
ed it and chopped the
walls by Saturday's final,
though. Of course, the
best boarding was on
Monday after everyone
had left,
