TALKING ED
SKATE
IT
ALL
It used to be called skateboarding, for lack of a better name, and it was all about rid-
ing a plank attached to four small wheels. Now we have 'street skaters," and a lot of
others who are into "mini-ramps" and "vert." Far be it for me to tell anyone what they
should or shouldn't skate. However, any skater who limits himself to one particular dis-
cipline might get less enjoyment out of their board, dig?
I can't believe that any true street rat would pass an empty bowl with tile and coping
and not take full advantage. And, you ramp ragers, when was the last time you did the
ten-stair ollie or slappied a curb? Mini-rampers, it's time to apply some of those new lip
tricks to real vertical. Freestylers, get on a wider board for a change. For all you who
skate by example, it's okay to steal tricks from Rodney as long as you put something
of your own back into it. Tony Hawk can win a street event just about whenever he
wants to. Top pros like Gator are game for a session on whatever surface you give
'em. Hey, everybody may have a preference in life, but variety is the spice.
This month's "Crossover article is in response to all the attitudes, stressing, rider
stealing, product poaching and politics that may be affecting you, the skater, indirectly.
It's a celebration of skating, even though it's time to gather your nuts for the winter, find
a few weatherproof skate spots and practice every day. When spring comes, we roll.
