Did Micke Alba move himself to
Phoenix, Arizona, permanently? Is
there perhaps a woman involved?
Did Stussy recently flee to Fiji to
avoid the ugly spectacle of the New
Kids On The Block appearing on
international TV wearing some of his

Sinatra, Jr., so humiliated that he's
taken to wearing Armani suits? Did

OBSERVATIONS
Ivan "Pops" Hosoi traded his '52
Chevy for Max's Mercedes. Christ,
meanwhile, returns from Europe where
he didn't enter some contests. Was this
a political gesture or was he suffering
from a minor whiplash neck injury?
Before he left, Christian and Tate
showed up at the Palmdale benefit for
Tobey Engstrom, a brain hemorrhage
victim. Skatemaster Tate, with friends
who obviously re-
sembled Salba,
rolled via motor home to
the Albuquerque, New Mexico,
ditch. This video endeavor
proceeded Mr. Tater's tour of
East Germany with the Boo-Yaa
tribe. Tate's new disc is out in the
UK and should soon be in the USA.
Interestingly enough, long ago a
particular skatepark appropriated a
Stecyk photograph of Peralta and
created a billboard out of it. Now some
outfit called L.A. Gear comes up with a
"Michael Jackson standing in front of a
wall of license plates" ad campaign.
Curiously, a Stecyk-designed art piece
and a recent Powell-Peralta trade show
booth each featured walls of old license
plates. Rumor has it that the head of
L.A. Gear is named Sandy Seman.
Guess what the name of the guy who
ran the aforementioned park was?
Sandy Seman. Nah, it's got to be a
coincidence, right? Don't bet on it.
Is Jill Schultz, daughter of dad
Charles, creator of Peanuts, now a pro
rollerblade skater?
Christian and Nathan Fletcher were
viewed at ten-foot Colton's indulging in
eight-second tube rides, backside ollies,
frontside stalefish floaters and rebound
shooters.
Rob Washburn, Steve Saiz and
Gabriel Rodriguez were seen session-
ing in S.B. to live reggae bands, mini-
ramps, portable bowls and empty pools.
In Nippon, Jay Adams, Craig
Johnson, Jeff Grosso and
Guy Grundy are the news of
the moment.
Bill Galfano of Wisconsin is
claimed by some as the new
standard bearer of the new
direction? Are we talking art,
fashion or street etiquette?
AMATEUR HOUR
It was in the "biggest little city
in the world" that the top eighty
or so amateur street-, vert-,
mini- and free-stylers gathered
to throw down what they know
for national honors. Under
cloudy, sometimes wet skies
the future of competitive skating
flew over ply and pounded.
pavement at the Reno State
Fairgrounds while the annual
fair was going on all around.
The biggest prize in many an
am's mind was the possibility of
a fat pro contract complete with
all the trimmings. There were
more manufacturers reps pre-
sent at this event than any pro
event for the last two years. Some
skaters started the day with one
sponsor and ended with another, as the
bidding war for talent was as intense at
the contest site as it was on the craps
tables the night before.
Heads of skate present included,
Larry Balma, Flying Fausto V. Mike
Ternasky, Rocco, Red Dog, Swenson,
George Wilson, Keith Cochrane and
Mike Rector. Keeping the skaters in-
line and fired up were the team players,
Todd Hastings, Steve Ruge, Jeff
Klindt, John Hogan, Sarge Carter,
Ridgeway, Greg Carroll, Jim Gray,
Buddy Carr, Hostetter and more, who
were all at each other's throats. Let's
just say there was tension in the air. The
vibing didn't overshadow the ripping.
though, as the skaters stuck to what
they know best. In the street finals it
was Florida's Lance Conklin topping
Chris Markovich. Freestyle was taken
by a deserving Rob Rodriguez. Mike
Frazier owned the vert ramp, followed
by Dave LeRoux and Chris Gentry.
Mini was aced by Chris Gentry, Chad
Vogt and Neal Hendrix respectively.
Watch for a full report next month.
