ACE FREHLEY

As Star Child in the colossus of coliseum carnage
Kiss, Ace Frehley rode an alcohol-drenched wave of
babes, platforms and pyrotechnics through the 70s and
early 80s. These days, however, Ace has gone solo,
taken the cold cream to his face and adopted a more low-
key lifestyle. I've definitely decided to chill out, take care
of business and not drive drunk anymore," he says lazily.
"But I'm still into everything I was into prior to Kiss. I'm
still into science fiction, I'm still the same guy. I just don't
put on makeup anymore." (Well, maybe just a little eye-

EALMIGHTY

This is how it started.
"Stiff Little Fingers," smiles the Almighty's Ricky Warwick.
"Being from Belfast, they were the first band I'd ever seen
live. They were such an inspiration-probably the main rea-
son why I picked up a guitar in the first place. The energy.
the attitude, the songs-they had it all!"
That was ten years ago. Ricky, now 23, has a white Les
Paul slung low around his ankles. All the ghosts of good,
crunching hard rock would probably love his band; the grit
of Motorhead, soul of the Clash, AC/DC's dumbness and
drive. Add a knack for the finest gasoline-drenched biker
rock to blaze some hate since folks started taking Zodiac
Mindwarp seriously and the Almighty live up to their aus-
picious namesake. (Continued on page 84)
Each of you state your name and position in the band.
David: David Quackenbush, vocals.
Joe: I'm Joe and I play the bass.
Warren: Warren Fitzgerald, guitar, drums, back-up vocals and lead vocals. And
box sleeping
Chris: My name is Chris. I play drums and I'm temporary.
Joe: We don't feel that way about you, Chris.
Warren: Chris, we love you.
Chris: I play in this band called the Cadillac Tramps, from Orange County.
Joe: Okay. That's enough of that band.
Warren: Back to the real band.
You guys are basically the original members; how long have you been
together?
David: Since we met. I've been with the band about five years.
Joe's been with the band about twenty-five years. Warren, about seventeen
years. Chris is temporary.
You just got back from Europe. How was your following there?
David: They listen to a lot of American music.
Joe: They like the Vandals. They like the Vandals a lot. A lot of other American
bands come to Europe, and they just pretend that they're watching the
Vandals. They want the Vandals to come to Europe so much they scream
about the Vandals whenever they see any other American bands.
Warren: Anything that even hints towards American
David: Vandalmania. Every time we go to a different part of Europe, it's the first
Vandals show that's ever been there, so naturally every punker scum of the
world who has wanted to see the Vandals for the last ten years would be there.
There were huge crowds every night. When we play in America, if people don't
come see us, they can see us next time, but the Europeans thought it was
going to be the last chance in their lives.
David: We played in East Germany, too-when it was still East Germany. We
played on the other side of the wall when there was a wall. We snuck across
with the little hidden maps and played in a church.
Joe: It was undercover. They gave us maps, and by the time you got to a cer-
tain checkpoint, you had to rip up your map.
Were there a lot of people there?
David: The whole scene came. Seventy-five people.
Joe: Everyone in the East German scene. Every person who suffered under the
oppression of the communist dictatorship was there.
Are you all from the Los Angeles area?
Warren: I'm from Huntington Beach. I have a T-shirt to prove it. (Cont on page 85)
