BO IKEDA &
SERGIE VENTURA
Tuff Skates, 1395 S. Lyon St., Santa
Ana, CA 92705
Christian Hosoi left Santa Cruz and
formed Tuff Skates. Tuff Skates' new
board line features the minimum con-
cave with maximum nose. The Bo Ikeda
Is concave dead? Well, if you is the smaller of the decks at 31%
PHELPS look at the current trend of
basically flat decks with fat
noses and tails, that seems to
be where it's at. A few years
ago the emphasis was on con-
cave, the deepest or most thor-
ough, but now all that matters
on a deck is the mongo nose.
The reason for this is that skat
ing is metamorphosing into an
ambidextrous science. Gone
are the days of goofy foot and
regular foot. We are at the
threshold of a new era. Fakie
this and revert that. Where will
the market go? Only you will
decide. Don't get me wrong, I
still ride a concave deck, I just
think that the evolution of
today's skateboards is truly
incredible. This month's col-
umn will feature some serious
lumber to put to the test.

long, 10" wide, with either 5½" or 6"
of nose, and an ultra short 6" tail (I think
they sent me a reject). The Sergie Ven-
tura is longer and wider than the Ikeda,
but it, too, has little concave, high-
lighted by the ultra nose. The Ventura
is 32" long, 10%" wide, with either 4%"
or 5%" of nose and a 6½" tail. The Tuff
Skates line is worthy of the name-they
last and hold up commendably under
the stress of the street and the pum-
meling of a brutal ramp session.

MIKE CONROY
Santa Monica Airlines, 4401 Soquel
Dr., Soquel, CA 95073
S.M.A., under the wing of San-
ta Cruz, is on top of things again
with the new Mike Conroy. The
Cruz Missile 2 concave is killer. The
Conroy is 30½" long, 10" wide,
with either 43/4" or 54" of nose
and a 6½" tail. What makes the
new 'cave better is the double-kick
nose as well as a thorough mid-
cave. I rode this puppy on the ramp
and it's a ripper. More from Santa
Cruz in the future.
MARK HEINTZMAN &
DOUG SMITH
G&S, 7081 Consolidated Way, San
Diego, CA 92121-2604
I saved the best for last. G&S is
making, in my opinion, the best
decks around. I told you about the
Claar a few months ago. Well, now
it's the Mark Heintzman and the
Doug Smith. What makes G&S
planks so excellent is the C90 con-
cave that features the dip in the mid-
dle of the board. This brings it closer
to the ground, and the lower you are,
the more stable the ride. The Heintz-
man is my favorite, because it is big
(32%" by 10%")
and strong. The
G&S nose is more
abrupt than most,
which makes the
nollie scene a
dream. Set this up
with 6½" of nose
and a 6½" tail and
you be in there.
The Smith is a
more "classic"
shape with a wider
tail that narrows at the hips and then
a rounded nose area. Doug's board
is 32% long, 10%" wide, with either
5½" or 64" of nose and a 6½" tail.
All other companies better take a
look at this wood because the future
is now. Hopefully, I will get my hands
on more of these.
MASTER BLASTER
Calmoc Enterprises, 42143-F Avenida
Alvarado, Temecula, CA 92390
Every so often I get something in
the mail that is truly one of a kind.
Everyone has some new invention
that "every skater needs" and the
Master Blaster fits into this
category-imagine a siren that's sup-
posed to warn pedestrians to back off.
Invariably, this invention will let the
peds know you are coming and most
assuredly they will jump right in front
of you. It amazes me to think that
someone could conceive, design and
build something so utterly ridiculous.
But hey, what do I know?
Hopefully I will get some feed-
back from you out there. Tell me
what you think you know. Write:
