World Industries, 3848 Del Amo, Unit
304, Torrance, CA 90503
It has been a while since I
checked out the World In-
dustries line. Initially, I felt that
they had rushed their first decks
so they weren't up to current
market standards. Well, now
Rocco is one of the big wheels
and finally has a product worthy
of your hard-earned cash.
Unleashed and back on the
streets is the Jesse Martinez
Maximum, and let me say that
a lot has changed from the old
Martinez. It has a smooth, even
'cave and strong wood that is
truly street worthy. The Mess's
slab is 32" long, 10" wide, with
5¼" of nose, a very similar 64"
tail and a 15" wheelbase. The
small tail and big nose seem
to indicate that the double tail
theory is coming back into the
picture. The concave isn't the
deepest, but it held my feets
where they're supposed to be.
With the Martinez also came
the Stick-O-Rama. It is very
similar to the Martinez in the
shape and concave department,
but it features the ultimate in
graphic design: a blank city-
Scape that you fill in with stickers
of assorted lowlife
(skaters included).
You can make
your deck truly
one of a kind. It's
314" long, 9½"
wide, with 54" of
nose, a 6%" tail
and a slightly
smaller 14½"
wheelbase.
Neither of these
decks features the
8-hole pattern and
the nose and tail
look almost the
same from the
side. When and if
you are to buy one
of these you won't
be let down. Also,
I like the name
World Industries,
it sounds so...
cosmopolitan.
MONTY NOLDER
Life's A Beach 1979 Palomar Oaks Way,
Carlsbad, CA 92009
Not long ago I did the Life's a Beach
Simpson, so it's only natural that I get to
the Nolder. While a lot of companies are go-
ing toward the double kick trip, Monty has
what is called a "classic" shape. The nose
(which does have a good kick to it) is pointed
at the tip, gets fatter, tapers back in the
mid-section, then opens up to a wider tail
area. As with the Simpson, Monty's mold
includes one bad ass concave that is
thorough as well as complete. The large
Nolder, if looked at from the side, has an
elongated "W" shape to it that not only
makes it stronger (it can evenly distribute
massive amounts of pressure), but keeps
your feet in there. The Nolder is a tub,
measuring in at 31%" long, 10½" wide,
with 4½" of nose, a 6% tail and for such
a large board, a short 15" wheelbase.Bad
Boy Club has the tools if you got the guts.
More on them later, including the long-
awaited Danforth and the BBC knee pads.
AIRWALK 540°
P.O. Box 227-9000, Carlsbad, CA 92008
Airwalk is the
first name in skate
shoes and they
are right on target
with the new 540°
design. The 540°
is a mid-ankle
shoe that features
a soft padded
double collar for
durability & com-
fort as well as a
3-point venting
system for max-
imum air flow. The
upper seems to
outlast the sole,
which features a
built-in mid-sole
cavity for maxi-
mum flex and
shock absorption.
Add to that a fash-
ionably correct,
triple vented, golf
flap lace saver and
you've got yourself
a shoe worth its
shine. They come
in some killer
colors, so take a
look at the Airwalk
line. You too will be
impressed.
PEANUT BROWN
Airbourne, P.O. Box 2409, La Jolla,
CA 92037
To be honest, I was hoping for
something a little more exciting from
Airbourne. The only distinctive feature on
the Peanut Brown (not shown) is its whale
tail. Aside from that, I found it lacking in
concave as well as nose. The tail is slightly
tri but the overall look is dismally flat. The
MONT
NOLDER
Peanut is 31" long, 9%4" wide, with either
4" or 4% of nose and a 7" tail. Things
are pretty tight around the skate industry
right now. Some of the smaller companies
better get it together because it's either
fish or cut bait.
Well, that is all for now. Remember,
today is the first day of the rest of your
life and the only rules are in your
mind. Jake Phelps, c/o Thrasher, P.O.
