DEL
EL MAR?
REVISITED
N.S.A.
RELIVED
DEL MAR
The NSA event where everything hap-
pened (at once). It was called off because
of rain and it happened anyway. Guys who
supposedly never talk wouldn't shut up in
NSA political discussions. Big movers who
supposedly care never came while guys
who supposedly can't make decisions
made them. Hawk surprised no one and
everyone when he won back-to-back in
street/vert. Hosol flew while Sergie came
late, qualified and sported a new tat in
celebration. Schmitt flew in from
Germany only to save his very rich
girlfriend's life in a high-speed
hospital session. Rodney Mullen
disappeared at 2:50 a.m. into the
Mexican night. Larry Gordon held
court while Sarge kept charge.
Hostetter advanced his form as did
Conroy, Knox and a multitude of
others. Fishbone played Iguana's in
TJ. to several thousand people.
Skipperboy, Tommy Guerrero,
Talldog and Mr. Fitz somehow stole
the team DT van and drove it down
Smugglers Canyon deep in the
heart of the border. On an apparent
bet, Engblom bested Keith Cochrane and
associates by catching four 120-pound six-
foot tunas at night in the middle of the
desert. T.G. and ACP were abandoned
south of the border in an apparent ritual of
supplication. Mike Cresini, Eric Nash, Ben
Schroeder and Henry Guiterrez all
became very adept at handling dollar bills
with their teeth. Chris Miller fronted a new
company called something like Zachary's
Private Planet. Mister Pine de L.J. showed
up with an old-style Japanese full-color tat
atop a Harley. Vitello drove out from some
go-cart gig and rode hard upon some
hapless types. J. Adams sported yet more
skin art while Steve Rocco appeared gen-
uinely concerned. Peralta attended with his
soon-to-be wife while Todd Hastings
prepared for perpetual bachelorhood.
Dettman created zines in the back of the
ebony 'bird while team T agents plotted
revenge. Alva dispensed sage advice,
Zaritsky dispensed training advice and
Lonnie H. dispensed the psychic baggage
of a broken home. Mike Vallely looked like

the fabled Oat Boy (see pic on previous
page for proof). Metiver took notes while he
valiantly attempted to decipher the
proceedings. The triple overhead south was
of concern to Metiver and a few others who
managed to indulge, including J. Boy and
Christian Fletcher. Jeff Phillips gave out
art work on T's. Ray Underhill oozed
credibility and patience. Mark Partain
abused the course, Scott Oster attacked
the public sensibility with some wet course
power moves and life went on as unusual,
until Honolulu perhaps?
The
first NSA
contest of
the 90 season
I was held in the
parking lot of the Del
Mar Fairgrounds, just a
skate away from the ruins of
the Skateranch where many of the
pros on hand honed their bones. This
Irony was lost on many of the that-was-
then-this-is-now types. New tats were the
order of the day as shown by Sergie Ventura
and Del Mar local John Shultes. Photos: M.Fo
NSA NEWS
In our tireless efforts to keep you up to
date on the 1990 NSA schedule, here is
everything we know at press time....
Honolulu Streetstyle The Blaisdell
Arena will again be the site when the pro
tour returns to the tropics. The event was
changed from mini-ramp to streetstyle at the
insistence of local skaters and promoters.
Subway (as in sandwiches) picked up the
title sponsorship for the event billed as the
"All Pro Skateboarding Championships."
That title is slightly misleading.
since the event is limited to the 40
pros who "qualified" at the first
street event in Del Mar. That
eliminated Tommy Guerrero (who
should have a lifetime exemption
from ever having to qualify), Ron
Allen, Sam Cunningham, Chuck
Dinkins, Jimmy Acosta, Mark Par-
tain, Danny Sargent, Ray Barbee
and Mike Vallely. Go figure. Maybe
the ollie and wallride events, featur-
ing a $1,000 winner-take-all format
will make up for it, since they are
open to "all NSA pro skaters." Full
coverage on these pages next ish.
Dallas Mini-Ramp Jeff Phillips Skate-
park will play host to a Friday, April 27th
mini-ramp event open to all NSA pros but
closed to all spectators. Whatever. At press
time there were rumors of a full-blown arena
event scheduled for the same weekend in
the same town under the banner of the WSA
(not Dave Boydston's version but a new
World Skateboarding Association). Whew.
Hard to keep up isn't it?

GEMINI
Better hit the Versateller, Gem, it's time to
make a major Neosporin purchase. It looks
like your month of months will be fraught with
peril and sketchiness. When Jupiter's moons
align with the Venutian orbital cusp (on May
24th) the polarity of your aura will be thrown
out of register and, consequently, you'll suf-
fer from balance problems, blurry vision and
possibly even the heartbreak of psoriasis. But
don't despair, dual one-by the 15th of June,
everything will be right as rain. Laybacks on
weekdays are a no-no all month, but ollie-
grabs are encouraged, especially when the
lunar horizon is visible. Don't drink any liquids
on the 12th, don't eat dinner on the 19th and,
above all, do not do any homework from the
7th through the 15th. If you live within 5° lat-
titude of the equator, disregard all the above
instructions and go fishing.

QUOTES
"It doesn't take a genius to lose his mind."
Rodney Mullen
"Do you want to be a pro skater or a transmis-
sion repair mechanic?"
Skip Engblom
"I hate girls who just like me for my Porsche."
Steve Rocco
"He may have been incoherent but I had no
problem understanding him."
Keith Cochrane
"She said it was a fifty-dollar goat head. I
said it was a T-shirt. She took the shirt off
my back and gave me the skull."
