Back in 1983 Hugh Bod "Boyle
and Steve Douglas were on the train to the Crystal Palace ramp.
outside London when Bod turned and said, half jokingly, "My
whole ambition in skating is to beat you, Steve." Well, seven
years later and halfway around the world in San Jose (where
both Brits have taken up residence), Douglas is admitting
defeat. It seems Bod has beaten just about everybody, and
if he sets his sights on the 1990 Pro season in the same
way, look out. Winning isn't everything to Bod, however,
he just wants to skate. "At Farnborough ramp he'd always
be the last one to finish skating." Steve remembers.
"Everyone would stop to go to the clubs or whatever
and Bod and I would say, "Yeah, you guys are part time
skaters,' and we'd ride until after dark." Editor Kevin
Thatcher caught up with the hard skating kid from West
Hampstead to talk about London, travel, pro contests,
police, music and skateboarding over Chinese food in
San Jose.
