end of the journey when the
Westsider chipped up onto his tail
and skidded to a swift halt. They
scanned the surroundings. A slow
shimmer reflected off of a long
forgotten marble courtyard, rid-
dled with tangible angles and
plateaus and crevices, all begging
to be violated by the recklessly in-
clined threesome. He set into ac-
tion the muscles that propelled
him to a cold snap through the air
and cracked onto the edge of a
curb made brittle by the freeze,
sending a spray of shattered
fragments into the shrubbery.
Crazy Kid reeled back in a quick
laugh then pushed off toward a
railing, onto which he roller-
coastered at speed with delight.
The Westsider noticed some
movement by the Science Garden
across the way. Now and then a
man would step out from behind
a tree and look impatiently at the
trio. There were others, but they
remained motionless, except
when one of them took a nervous
drag off of a cigarette. The
Nightwatch, protectors of the
nightly regions.
It was gravity which was put to
the test on this occasion. The
chilled air, much thinner than it
usually is, made travel as swift as
the currents of the October swell.
The riders figured they had a
clean two hours worth of solitary,
and only then the new dawn
patrols would be making their first
sweep through the area. The
Westsider had researched it all.
A handful of maneuvers later,
the enthusiasts sauntered off and
away, concluding another day of
the evasive ritual. Freedom.
Unmolested. An experience to be
cherished until the next day's
adventure. The temperature had
risen another four degrees. It
wasn't much, but any bit helps..
The wheels gripped a little better
as they made their way to the
center of the city, cracking the
concrete as they went.
