Here's a segment designed to give
you a quick look at the boiling new
blood currently pumping up the pro
ranks. Both Danny Way and Tom
Knox became household names in
their rookie years, and it's about time
you got to know them better.
AIRS L
DANNY WAY
Danny Way is a 15-year-old skater
from Vista, California. He won his
first pro contest in Michigan early
last year and has placed in the top
four several times since then. His
technical style and innovative
technique threaten to not only give
the pro elite a run for the cash, but
take some as well. We spoke with
him at the SUAS Houston contest
in December 89.
Why do you skate?
Because if I didn't skate I'd have
nothing else to do and then I'd be
bored. Because skating's fun. Also,
I have a fascination with transition-it
never ends, it never has a flat spot.
The first time I ever skated was at Del
Mar and ever since then I always
wanted to skate.
When was that?
Nine years ago, when I was six.
If you could do one thing to change
the world what would you do?
Get rid of all trends.
Then there would be nothing.
That would be great.
You want to change the world into
nothing?
I just don't like how people go out
of their way to show how cool they
are. I'd like things to happen naturally
instead of people forcing themselves
to look or act like something.
Give me an example.
School is a good example.
Give a particular trend example.
Like, uhmm. I'm sketchy to say it.
I don't want to get beat up.
Just give an outline. You're a tough
guy.
Okay, like white people in America
trying to be Rasta. That's kind of
dumb because Rasta is a religion
and people just grow dreads and
THE
smoke pot and they think they're all
Rastafarians. I don't understand that
at all, I think it's ridiculous. I don't like
grass roots, either-people going out
of their way to do the old-style tricks
instead of trying to be innovative.
If you could do one thing to change
yourself what would you do?
I'd grow a bit bigger
How big would you grow?
Big enough so I could beat people
up when they mess with me. I want
to be burly for one day and beat up
the people who mess with me now.
If you could do one thing to change
your hairdo, what would you do?
Shave my head.
That wouldn't be changing your
hairdo, that would just be wiping
it out.
I don't have a hairdo, I have a
hairdon't.
Perfect. What will you be doing in
ten years?
In ten years I'll be 25, so I'll still be
skating. (Continued on page 1)
