Tres Amigos de Texas
When you're talkin' Texan, skate history that is, you'd be leaving a large gap if the names
John Gibson, Craig Johnson and Jeff Phillips weren't mentioned. These three big boys put
the big state on the skate map and nurtured a hardcore scene through an era when dedica-
tion and determination were more common than skate spots. Tex Gibson came to California
from Houston in 1980 and showed many how to ride a ramp with power and style while
winning in parks at the same time. Dallasonians Johnson and Phillips stayed closer to home
while developing a monster approach to balls-out vertical assaults and ditch raids that was
felt throughout the land. They ventured out with skatenecks like Jeff Newton and Dan Wilkes
on trailer tours of the East Coast and Midwest in the early eighties. This Texas trio has added
a lot to our pages over the years and we thought it appropriate to round them up for a group
portrait and a Texas history lesson.
