To celebrate the first major snowfall of 1989, a burly bevy of boarders gathered at Donner Ski
Ranch in the northern Sierras for the first annual White Wave Winter Whomp Out. Billed as a non-
event, it was really an excuse to kick off the opening of the "resort season" (most Tahoe hardcores
had been backwoods boarding practically all year). The theme of the day was pretty much just
"get out there and slide." No pressure, no contest, no vibing and damn it, no stickers on the lift
poles. There was also no halfpipe due to the late dump and, of course, there are never enough
comp lift tickets to go around. The Whomp Out attracted a rag tag crew of Thrasher staffers, pro
