through fertile farmlands to Rockverie, a
village an hour outside Tallinn. With an
invitation to skate in the town's festival,
we split into two cars and hit the laneless
rocky highway. Some slalomers from the
local skateboard club were warming up
for the slalom and race event as we pulled
up. Kalev won the slalom event for his
age group with his fancy footwork, and
he received the prize of a Soviet
skateboard. It was now our time to ses-
sion and the rest of the group still hadn't
arrived. Since Monika's foot was out of
commission, Adam and I were the only
Americans skating. They cheered when
we g-turned and clapped when we aired
and ollied from a piece of metal held up
by rocks. We found out later that a rock
had jumped from under a truck and
broken the window of the car carrying the

The day before we left Estonia for Len-
ingrad, the local news came out to cap-
ture our style at a skate spot we found
earlier in our stay. Eric and Kalev dragg-
ed out a metal quarterpipe they had built
a week before. A crowd gathered as we
skated for the camera. Sergei was trying
airs for the first time, and members of the
group yelled "Crazy Sergeil" The
coverage ended with an interview, and
the skating ended with dehydration.
After my last Estonian meal and a
healthy glass of tea, I sat down and
recorded an interview with Enic.

H: How long have you been skating?
Since 1980, but I was very fond of
skating at an early age. I would borrow a
board from the other guys. When I got
my own, I spent all my free time skating.
How long have you been making
skateboards?
You know the products here, they are
very poor quality. We had quite con-
stricted technical possibilities. Every guy
made his own board. We managed to get
polyurethane, and we cast our own
wheels at home. They were very hard,
but better than the factory ones. Some
guys designed trucks (Continued on page 116)
