MARK CERNICKY
After four years of big
ramps, high speed fakie
airs, music that has
something to say, #26 sand-
wiches at Julian's, surfing,
Huntington Beach, and look-
ing up to skaters like Jeff
Phillips, Jason Jesse, Chris
Miller and Tom Groholski,
nineteen-year-old Mark is
ready to "Get through with
this world and on to the
next place." Sound a little
bit off kilter? That's all right
by Mark. He feels that "In
an insane world, the sane
man must appear insane."

MIKE TAYLOR
of
At 23 years with 20 years
skating experience under his belt,
Mike is truly a veteran. Fueled by
Taco Bell and Hagen Daaz and in-
spired by his girlfriend April, this
Santa Barbara boy has effigy
skated huge natural spots, ripped
everything from pools to parks to
curbs to mini ramps, held over thirty
underground contests on his
backyard ramp, and rocked out to
S.L.F., R.K.L. and the Damned.
When he's not skating or admiring
the style of guys like Chris Miller,
Matt Hensley and Tony Hawk, you'll
probably find Mike making his
intergalactic zine, "Fran," com-
peting in a pro snowboarding
contest or travelling somewhere. Ask
Mike and he'll tell you, "A real
skater is anyone who has a smile on
their face and a board under their
feet." Photo by Scott Starr.
RUBEN ORKIN
When The Rube's not working at
Berkeley's gourmet grub house Chez
Panisse, he's busy serving up blazing
speed lines and slapping Rube-a-
dupe's (alley-oop frontside grind to
backwards lipslide) on any surface that
will accept-the steeper the hill, the
deeper the pool, the better. On an off
day, you can catch him grubbing on a
Zamarano's tongue burrito with
radishes and green onions, day-
dreaming about skating Glory Hole
with Curtis Hsiang, the Chavez
brothers, Neil Blender, Caballero and
Wade Speiers, then topping it all of
with a couple Lucky Strikes. Rube's
goals are to eat as much as he can
every day, ride big vert, and someday.
to get into the ring with Mike Tyson.
