Building the Y-shaped mini inside Honolulu's Blaisdell Arena was no easy task.
If you've been to a pro vertical event over the last few years, you may have been awed
by the sight of a large half-pipe sitting in the middle of an arena floor as if it had popped
up over night. Well, in some cases it has. You may have also noticed a tall, blonde skater
looking dude working on or near the ramp. If you have, then you've seen master ramp builder
Tim Payne and his able crew of hammermen and saw dogs hard at work giving the ramp
a final tune-up before the show.
Now, many of you skaters out there can boast of building a half-pipe or three, but in Tim
Payne's case we're talking about a guy who has over fifty large scale structures under his
tool belt. Mix in a vast assortment of street structures and a few special order backyard
and warehouse mini-ramps and you've got a lifetime worth of work for any one person.
Hey, the guy lives and sleeps ramp construction...and, of course, gets in his fair share of
ramp ripping on the side.
We caught up with Tim on the day after he completed the Santa Cruz ramp training facility
in San Jose, CA, and the day before he was to start on another custom mini in S.F. We
talked about just how many ramps Tim had built or designed over the years. Of course,
he couldn't remember all in detail but he did come up with quite an impressive list that
will give you hammer blisters just looking at it.
