RE-BOLTING
Doctor Rick Blackhart in the office.
ASK THE DOCTOR
With Rick Blackhart
I've been using Thunderbolts for quite
some time now and I didn't have any prob-
lems until I put my most recent board
together. After about two weeks huge stress
cracks developed on top of the board next
to the truck holes. The cracks are getting
bigger every day and it sounds like it's going
to crack every time I ride it. My friend says
that it is caused by when you hammer the
bolts into the board and that some com-
panies don't warranty boards that have
Thunderbolts in them. If this is true, why
hasn't this happened before? My skating
hasn't changed, I'm not a launch/acid drop
man and I've never broken a board before.
Did I just get a crappy board or should I stop
using Thunderbolts?

I guess that's the price you have to pay
for "high-performance." The decision is
yours-would you rather replace bolts or
boards? The stress on your board when
you are riding is concentrated at the truck
mounting area. Therefore, something's
got to give (i.e. board, bolts or trucks).
Why don't you just head on down to a
good hardware store and get grade eight
aircraft quality flathead bolts and nuts.
Then you'll have a set-up that's as good
as it's going to get.
BOARD BASHING
When I see people thrashing up their
skateboards, it gets me mad. They act as
if they were rich. They throw their skate-
boards at curbs and crash them into walls.
do you think?
that's where my problem comes in. You see,
last year I was undefeated on the freshman
team and had a 4-3 record on varsity. Back
then I thought wrestling was pretty cool, but
that summer my parents wanted me to do
some post-season wrestling. After about
three weeks of that, my leg snapped
because of some problem in the bone. This
year my parents want me to do the same,
but I don't want to because after I broke my
leg. I was really turned off to wrestling. I've
tried every line from, "What do I have to do,
wrestle to be accepted in this family?" to
"Doesn't the fact that this is the last sum-
mer with my friends mean anything?" but
they just give me that crap about my brother.
I've thought of telling them I'm gay (I'm not).
but they would probably just laugh. When
I tell them I don't want to break another bone
because of something I don't even like, they
just laugh and say I could have broken my
leg doing anything. I very desperately need
some help on this one.

Dude, you definitely have a problem.
I don't know how old you are now, but if
my parents were trying to make me do
something that I not only didn't like but
knew was dangerous, I would tell them
to forget it. It's your life-figure it out and
do it. Set your goals and achieve them.
I'm sure your parents won't dig what I'm
saying or what you're going to do, but
that's tough. It's my job and it's your life.
22 SKIDDOO
My dad and I are having an argument.
concerning the use of a skidplate. He thinks
I need one and I think they're worthless. He
asked me for one good reason not to use
one. I told him that I could ollie only half as
high with a skidplate on, which he didn't
believe. Then he made a wager that if a
skidplate didn't reduce an ollie, I'd owe him
Sometimes I just want to tell them off. What fifty dollars and have to use a skidplate, but
if it did reduce an ollie, he'd buy me a new
board and I wouldn't have to use one.

It's not your board, John, so what's the
deal? Skating is a release. Some people
vent their energy by being smooth and
stylish and slow, while others do it by
slamming and grinding and pummeling.
If it bothers you that much, go ahead and
tell them off, get punched out, take two
aspirin and don't call me again.
TAKE DOWN LET DOWN
I have this real problem with my parents
and them wanting me to wrestle. Two years
ago my brother got fifth place in the state
in wrestling and ever since then they've
been expecting me to do the same. But
Here again, what the hell does your
dad care what you put on your board? Did
he buy it? If so, I can see why he wants
you to put a skidplate on. If he didn't buy
it, tell him to butt out. As far as the bet
goes, sorry Pops, ollies are affected by
skidplates. Just buy the kid a board and
let him do what he wants. If you want a
skidplate, put one on your own board.
