Take the Manic Ride

COLLECTION
It has been a few years since we
have heard from these Santa Cruz
maniacs. Their newest release from
SST contains all the power and fury
that amassed while they were holed-
up. "Take the Manic Ride" is a 50-
minute journey into the darker side
of life that we all see every day but
prefer to shut out. Blast doesn't
praise this side of life, rather they look
it dead in the eye and say, deal me
in! Guitarist Mike Neider's main influ-
ences seem to be Henry Rollins,
Santa Cruz and fumes. He tears
every inch of his guitar and gives an
even performance from the word go.
Blast has a sound similar to no one,
handle it-a double R.K.L. album
can do some serious damage.
Believe me, this one does. It's a
raunchy collection of 21 of the
loudest, fastest numbers to ever
leave the San Francisco area. R.K.L.
proves that they're just as tight live
as on their studio Lps and that
England and New York aren't the
only places that produce good thrash
bands. Some of the songs included
are "Lies" "Scab on my Brain,"
"Tribute to the Pothead." "Feelings
of Hate" "Life in a Bottle," Sargasm,"
"Ded Tod's" and "Berlin Rock City

Those crazy hoodlums should
never have been let out of their bed-
rooms, let alone the country. These
boys spell nothing but TROUBLE.
The folks who booked R.K.L. in
Berlin just didn't know what they
were getting themselves into. Oh
well. We could have sent a nice
group of boys or some grade "A"
students as ambassadors of the U.S.,
but R.K.L.?! What's Germany going
to think of us now? A double album?

Still Suck!
Caroline
Tesco finally put an end to it. He
did so before the non-stop, cock-rock
party machine known as the Meat-
men lapsed into the outer realms of
Vegas-style showboat self-parody.
The joke never seemed to get stale,
just more grand. Their self-described
"sophomoric scatology with underly-
ing savagery" was starting to tread
dangerously close to being a very un-
funny arena-ism. As it stands, they've
done their damage without forgetting
that indeedy-do, only the good die
young. This album was captured live
on their final '88 mini-tour with the
Meat-Crew sporting its all-star line-
up of Lyle Preslar (Minor Threat) and
Stuart Casson (Dove) on guitars,
Graham McCulloch (Negative Ap-
proach) on bass, Mark "Goolie" Ker-
manj on drums and the big TV
himself as main marauder. This is a
hard rock unit capable of debasing.
bastardizing and lambasting rock
traditions from every generation.

Alive fashion, this disc dishes out a
broad selection of favorites, dating
from their humble Detroit heyday to
Tesco's legendary solo Ep to the
Meatmen's latter day rock-n-roll gran-
diosity. As a special never-released
bonus, they include a souped-up ver-
sion of Sweet's "Rebel Rowser"
amidst such classics as "War of the
Superbikes, "Meatmen Stomp and
the ever-popular "Wine, Wenches
and Wheels." May the Meatmen
forever rest in peace. The final

beegie geebies, doesn't it? Well, I
think that's how the Thrill Kill Kult
wanted to affect their listeners. The
last thing they want is for you to feel
relaxed or not worried. Songs like
"Do You Fear for Your Child?" are
made to bring out the paranoia in
parents, while making them dance,
of course. "And This is What the
Devil Does makes you feel like you
should go to church and pray. Other

Sub Pop 200
Sub Pop Records
Sub Pop wants to show the world
that Seattle has a rockin' scene and
plenty of good bands to keep it go-
ing. They've put together a limited
box set for those devoted fans who
want the type of grunge that can only
be found on Sub Pop-three whole
dang albums worth! Some of the
Northwest-based bands included in
this killer collection are Mudhoney.
Blood Circus, Nirvana, Screaming
Trees, Soundgarden, Tad. The Fluid,
Catt Butt, Girl Trouble, The Thrown
Ups and Green River-just to name
a few. Each band has an unreleased
track on this 3-Lp set and each band
rocks your panties, dig? A few of my
favorites are Mudhoney's version of
"The Rose," which makes Bette
Midler's version sound like "The
Weed." Also, Screaming Trees prove
that they're one of the only bands
that can do justice to a Hendrix song
with their cover of "Love or Confu-
sion." If you can get your paws on
one of these here box-sets, grab it
They only printed 5,000 copies, and
the way Sub Pop is growing in
popularity, these puppies won't be
lying around the record store bins too
much longer. It's soon to be a groovy
little rock and roll collector's itern.
Also look for new Sub Pop noise; it's
consistently good garage rock-if

to alienate yet seduce our weak and
vulnerable souls. Instead of being
satanic worshippers themselves,
Thrill Kill Kult poke fun at the mind-
less ritualists who sold their souls. In
a Skinny Puppy or Revolting Cocks
type of way, Thrill Kill Kult expand on
the typical Wax Trax sound and make
it really interesting. Wax Trax took a
bit of a chance on this group, but it's
great that not all the label's bands
can be put into the same category.
Maybe they'll take more chances like
this in the future. DO

grinding guitars create a hot combi-
nation. Nomeansno sing about
capitalism, pollution and suicide.
This isn't the type of punk band that
whines and complains, though.
Instead the band makes funny stories
out of these issues to show just how
stupid people can be. In "Junk," they
scream about how all our garbage
gets buried, yet the pollution is
coming from the sky. Other numbers
including "Teresa, Give Me that
Knife," "Dark Ages," and "And That's
Sad" tell enjoyable, socially aware
stories. Instead of spouting blind
anger, Nomeansno expresses con-
cer and fear about the things going
