Black "before we sucked" is joined
by Texas post-punk noise gurus
Scratch Acid. I don't know why
these folks never got together
before; they're perfect-perfectly
noisy. Rapeman, named after a
Marvel Comics 'character who
rapes the bad guys and leaves
them for police, has created a big
stink with women's rights groups
in England. It's bound to stir
something up in the U.S., too-if
all goes well for Albini. Regardless
of all the hype, Steve just wants to
rock, and he does. His new band
shows how great guitar playing
and a hard attitude can still have
a profound effect on people. DO
smoothly into my fragile body. Of
course I'm gonna play it loud! Why
else would I listen to a punk rock
record? Like most other show-
goers that I know, I'm so damn deaf
I have to play it loud to even hear
the noise! And believe me, it is
noise, sometimes good, some-
times bad. I just can't tell anymore.
Yes, you guessed it-grungy
guitars, dirgy, dungeon vocals and
most importantly, it's very, very fast.
In fact, Napalm Death claim to be
the fastest band in the world.
Among England's new wave of
speed thrash punks, this crew is
one of the most popular, uh, bands
around. Instead of complaining
about the government, though, like
most early 80s punks, Napalm
Death expand their ideology and
complain about sexism and
capitalism. Though you can't hear
a word they're saying, you can
read along with the lyrics on the in-
ner sleeve. If you can't read, just
listen to the noise, it's convincing
and grabbing, ugly, yet righteous,
Napalm Death carry on where
GBH and The Exploited left off. DO

COLLECTION
SINGERS AND PLAYERS
Vacuum Pumping
ON-U Sound, Lp
The On-U Sound posse con-
tinues to convince people that reg-
gae music is not dead. Combining
roots reggae with On-U Sound's
own style of cutting up, dubbing up.
and splicing-the Singers and
Players place you in a jungle of hot
rhythms and surrounding sounds.
I can't understand where these
fresh new beats come from. They
don't hit you, they just sink right
into you. The lyrics are chants,
echoes and cries that make you
want to sing along, or at least
dance. Would you expect anything
less from master producer, Adrian
Sherwood? This album is a cool
running collage of roots, dancehall
and lover's rock. I'm not exactly
sure what the vacuum is pumping.
but it sounds terrific. Tracks like
"Run Them Away," "Lighthouse,"
"Boof Um, Baff Um," and
"Pneumatic" carry on the quality
tradition that On-U Sound has
established in reggae music. DO
FUGAZI
Fugazi
Dischord, Lp
One of the most innovative out-
fits to come out of the American
underground in many a moon,
Washington DC's Fugazi will never
be fully captured on vinyl. Fierce
spontaneity blasts forth from
guitarist/co-vocalist lan MacKaye's
terse, rhythmic guitar lines as they
couple with the raw, rage-filled
vocalizations of old Egg Gumbo
and the far more soulful Guy (Rites
of Spring) Piccioto. Vengefully
political, Fugazi tackle unpleasan-
tries of life including AIDS, sexism
and nationalist rhetoric in the same
enticingly indirect fashion that
distinguished the legendary Minor
Threat from their often heavy-
handed contemporaries. Unfor-
tunately, Fugazi are predominantly
a live affair. This seven-song Ep is
too flat, whereas a live first album
would have more accurately re-
flected Fugazi's angry delivery and
MacKaye's wry wit. This is a decent
introduction but it certainly falls
short of the live performance. MG

RAPEMAN
Two Nuns and a Pack Mule
Touch and Go, Lp
And you thought you were over
the grind of the ever-popular, ever
hated Big Black. Well, guess
again. Ring leader and public
enemy number one Steve Albini is
back and he's so far in your face,
you can't even breathe. That's right
the man who disassembled Big
CRAZYHEAD
Desert Orchid
EMI, Lp
I don't know, I just don't know.
I thought the whole grebo thing
was over in England since acid
house took over. Well, Crazyhead
sort of confirm that assumption,
but at the same time they send
grebo out on a good note. Their
long-awaited debut album shows
a healthy mix of old-fashioned rock
and roll with hints of 60's and even
some 70's influences. Not the most
extreme signs, just hints. Crazy-
head are one of the only rock
bands that can gracefully add a
horn section to their grunge.
Crazyhead make England look a
little better since that Horoscope
Brainwash what's-his-face guy fell
off the face of the earth. Even if you
can't stand them, they look pretty
cool. They have cool names too-
like Porkbeast and Fast TransAtlan
tic Dick. Anyway, there's some
pretty good noise here on "Time
Has Taken Its Toll On You," "Rags,"
"Dragon City" and "I Don't Want
That Kind Of Love." At least they
know how to pucker their lips-
that's a must for people who tease
their hair. DO

From Enslavement to
Obliteration
Earache, Lp
Oh no, not another hardcore
album that has the two most
popular punk words engraved
upon its sleeve-"PLAY LOUD"
Gee whiz, maybe I should play it
softly to let the rhythms soak

SHINEHEAD
Unity
Elektra, Lp.
Shinehead (AKA Carl Edmund
Aiken) is definitely down with the
latest ragamuffin rapsters of the
East Coast. On his Unity album.
which was partially produced by
Jam Master Jay, he blends hard
hip-hop with dancehall DJ reggae.
Born in Jamaica and raised in New
York, Shinehead shows his street
influences on "Chain Gang Rap"
(a song about sneaking a ride on
a subway train). He also disses
drugs and crack heads on" Gimme
No Crack": "I'm real cool, I chill
to the max, I might act crazy, but
I don't smoke crack" And what
would a beat record be without so-
meone else's famous riff? Shine
took this into consideration when
he created his rockin' version of the
Beatles' classic "Come Together"
on his own song "Unity." The new
style of reggae/rap is doing well on
both coasts with groups like
Boogie Down Productions, Sly and
Robbie, Asher D and even Run
DMC experimenting with it. Unity
is a valuable addition to the crea-
tive B-boy's record collection. DO
