This month's set-up includes a
Schmitt Reese Simpson with new
Cutter trucks and the new Santa
Cruz 95A Big Balls. As a complete
set up it is excellent. The deck is
so comfortable that it made my
other (old) deck feel convex.
When I first looked at the new
Schmitt Stix Series 3 Concave, I
was reminded of another deck that
was ahead of its time, the Santa
Cruz Steve Alba Bevel. This deck
had the distinction of being the first
of its kind, a mega-concave, all-
purpose skate. This was around
1982 and by the standards of the
day it had the deepest concave
and most radically upturned nose.
I don't know what happened to the
bevel idea, but the people I knew
who rode that board swore by it. My
own conclusion is that the industry
was not ready for this type of shake
up and this forerunner was swept
under the carpet. I'm not saying.
the new Schmitt concave is a copy
of the Bevel, but good ideas can't
stay under the carpet forever, and
nobody could have swept it out bet-
ter than Schmitt. Skating is notor-
ious for its ups and downs and
most of the bigger companies are
afraid of rocking the boat. This new
Schmitt concave will be state of the
art soon. Don't be surprised when
you see other companies trying
their luck at it.
The Reese Simpson deck
measured 31½" long, 10%4" wide,
with 4½" of nose and a 6½" tail.
The Schmitt concave features a
fifteen-degree nose that also
sports measurements in the 4½"
range for that added assurance in
the hang-up department.
Cutter trucks are quite different
from other trucks. The baseplates
are a lightweight combination of
nylon and plastic and their geo-
metry makes them ride lower to the
ground. The closer you are to the
ground the lower your center of
gravity is and the more stable your
ride will be. I judge trucks two ways:
1) go down hills fast and 2) abuse
some curbs. Cutters are incredibly
stable in hill situations, but as far
as curb action goes the plastic
plates wore out rather quickly. I
think this is the story behind them:
Dave Dominy, the father of Tracker
trucks, sold Tracker in '81 and
moved on to other things. With the
recent explosion of the industry he
must have seen the need for a
strong, light truck. His answer was
the Cutter. The baseplate is a lot
thicker than most, so if you do
acquire a set, you may need to get
new hardware. Write to Cutter for
full info. Cutter Trucks, PO Box 246,
Cardiff By The Sea, CA 92007.
Santa Cruz is the only company
that sends test wheels in all
available durometers, which helps
me get a feeling for the differences
and similarities in the new prod-
ucts. Big Balls come in 97A, 95A
and 92A for all types of riders and
riding. At 65mm they will give you
the height for the curbs and such,
but a little less wheel bite than the
ever popular 66 Bullets. Get some
95's and jam your favorite hill-
you'll want to do it all night long.

With the Simpson came the
Schmitt Douglas and the Vision
Gonzales and Rose-
crans decks. Between.
these three boards
there are many differ-
ent shapes and sizes.
The Douglas is 31"
long, 9%" wide, with a
4½" mega nose and
the same 6½" tail.
This board looks kind
of like a Blender, wider
up front, and gradually
by Jake Phelps
thinner toward the tail area. The
Rosecrans is thinner up front for
the street rider. Kele's board is
30%" long, 9%" wide and it fea-
tures the same nose and tail as the
Simpson and the Douglas. The
new Gonzo is another story alto
gether. It doesn't have half the
nose kick and it features a much
flatter concave. (Maybe Vision, in
their hurry to send this stuff, didn't
get their latest model?) Mark's
deck is 30% long, 10" wide, with
4" of nose and the standard 6½"
tail. None of these decks have tri-
tail but they do feature that "foot
well tail that I am always telling
you about. Vision Sports, 1395 S
Lyon St., Santa Ana, CA 92705.
Pro-Design kneepads have
been re-designed for maximum
protection. The caps of older pads,
when over-abused or over-
sweated, tended to hit you in the
shin area. The new pads have
been reinforced in this area. The
addition of an extra, lower mini-cap
provides longer life for the pad and
more security for your knee. Also
enclosed in the package was the
heavy duty elbow
pad. You would be
extremely hard pres
sed to find a set that
would provide more
protection. When I
put them on, I kind of felt like a
crab-I didn't feel as if I had max-
imum movement in them-but I
don't wear elbow pads very often
so what do I know? The recaps still
wear out too fast but the pads do
take one hell of a beating. Write to
Wild Bill at Pro-Design. He will tell
you straight. Pro-Design, PO Box
925213, Houston, TX 77292-5213.
The products this month have
been above average. The wheels
are smooth and fast, the decks
strong and rigid and the trucks are
light and stable. And now a word
about money: I know that prices for
products will vary incredibly
depending on your location. In
California boards cost about $45
without tape, trucks cost about $32
a set and a good set of wheels
should not cost more than $28
without bearings. If they're higher
in your area, you might try shop-
ping around. It might take you at
while to find the cheapest price, but
be persistent. Also, write to the
manufacturers and tell them what
you think about their equipment.
They will be better for it. Thank you
for your time. Next month: new
Powell G Bones, new Z-decks and
$50 bearings(?!) Keep that mail.
