AUSTRALIA TORQUAY RAMP RIOT II
Oct. 29-30, 1988, Rip Curl Ramp - Torquay
Objective: To pit the best skaters from Australia and New
Zealand against a gang of touring pros from America,
on Aussie turf.
The Action: Approximately 30 skaters were
vying for a fair amount of bucks. This
wasn't going to be just a picnic in the park.
Five heals quickly broke the cut to 16
on the first day. The wind was definitely
a factor, making for a lot of deep landings
on high airs. After a press party hosted by
Rip Curl in their shop lounge, many of the
boys stayed tuned with a raucous mini-
ramp session in front of the shop. Lance,
Christ, Nash, Gonz and Grosso blazed into
the late eve. Grosso did just about
everything except pull his pants
down on a rock 'n roll. (Oh, wait,
he did that!)
Sunday's finals were of a caliber
that ranks with the best we've seen
all year. The Kiwis, Gregor Rankine
and Lee Ralph, were wrecking. Aussie
champ Tony Hallam was working. Sorgie
Ventura was flying Mike Crescini con-
quered. Nash and Grosso got ugly. The
Bones Brigade burned and the Hosoi air
show was in full effect. Then there was
