POWELL SKATE ZONE EXPO
Every skater needs a zone, or so say the
people at the Powell Corporation. On
October 15th, 1988, they held a massive
skate fiesta to promote public skate
areas. MacKenzie Park in sunny Santa
Barbara was transformed into a tem-
porary ripper's paradise, complete with
mini-ramp, multi-obstacle street course
and more top pros and ams than most
contests. Thousands of spectators were
on hand to witness the action. Ninety
degree weather didn't hold any of the
participants back from non-stop shred-
ding and the crowd (aside from roving
packs of rabid autograph hounds) was
well behaved. Demo organizers' biggest
difficulty was persuading the skaters to
stop skating at the end of the day. Santa
Barbara city officials were impressed by
the huge turnout and generally mellow
behavior, but months of negotiation still
lie ahead for Santa Barbara skate zone
proponents. Bureaucratic lameness.
may prevent locals from ever attaining.
a public facility, but events like this make
it worth everyone's while to keep trying.
