IMPACT
TOUR
INFORMATION
Story by Mike Timble
The Swatch Impact Tour was a two-hour action
sports demo with the likes of Jeff Philips, Chris Miller,
Kevin Staab, Gator, Joe Johnson and Jimi Scott. It's
a combination of video, rock and roll and a mind
blowing vertical attack on a 30' wide, 11' tall, 10' tran-
sition and 1' vertical behemoth of a metal ramp.
"I wanted to promote the sport to people who
wouldn't normally see it," said John Hogan, ex-
Gullwing team manager and creator of the Impact
team. "We're trying to add fuel to the fire."
Bill Silwa, the rock concert promoter who
helped Hogan organize the event, adds,
I was really obvious to us there was a void on
a mainstream level."
The original idea for the tour was to produce
UPDATE
an Endless Summer-type documentary about he
skateboard lifestyle, which would be financed by a
cross country tour. Eventually, the idea of the tour
overwhelmed the movie and now a video about the
tour is a secondary objective of the event. Hogan
began contacting what he felt were the sport's best
skaters for the tour. Originally he contacted the likes
of Christian Hosoi, Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen
to be involved. Hosoi had prior commitments and
Powell management decided
it wasn't in their company's
best interest to be involved.
"A lot of people thought it
was not going to be good for
the sport or the in-
dustry," Hogan said.
"Some thought we
couldn't pull it off
...but we did."
"I don't think this
is anything bad for
the sport," Silwa
said. "I hope we
changed people's
minds."

Second place Tom Boyle tweaks a mean
lien air at the Northwest Regional Qualify-
ing event. Inset: The Cedar Crest Ramp
Jam was a burly event. Many hot skaters
came together to test the strength of the
ramp's metal walls with tricks like Jay
Henry's crail to tail.
