The Forest City Summer Spectacular
Amateur Streetstyle
August 12-14, Rockford, IL
by Mike Timble
What started as a pro streetstyle and
freestyle contest ended up as a sponsored
amateur contest because of lack of industry
support. The Forest City Spectacular was
an ambitious idea by freestyler Dan Gesmer
and skatepark owner Sandy Mulligan.
Though it had no affiliation with the NSA,
the Spectacular attracted skaters from all
over the Midwest and both coasts and
turned out to be one of the summer's-best
amateur contests.
The first day spotlighted a new jump ramp
event. Runs were approached like a ski
jump and each launch was scored. Real
skating didn't begin till the second day.

4. Paul Schneider
5. Phil Hammel
6. Jeff Ramos
The streetstyle course consisted of a
complicated arrangement of ramps, slide
devices and walls. Nearly 70 skaters paid
the steep $40 entry fee to compete.

Left: It's true, so overcome the
nausea and deal with it. Even the Wall
Disney people have jumped on the
bandwagon with their skate bonanza
in "Main Street U.S.A."
Hurry, hurry, hurry! Step right up and join the insanity.
As skateboarding grows, so does public curiosity and each
skateboarder's desire to be number one. The number of
contests and skate-fests increases every year to fulfill these
needs. The purpose of this side-show is to get all that
monkey business covered. From charity to victory, we'll give
you the good word on the rolling world.

Every year the ESA (Eastern Skateboard
Association) gives East Coast skateaholics
gallons of excitement to fulfill their addic-
tion. They put on contests almost every
week in cities all over the eastern seaboard.
If you're in their turf next season, be sure
to check the series out.
To the left we have an elated Kathy Zatko
Kathy was the first girl to enter an E.S.A.
competition (freestyle) and she ripped it up
for a fourth place. The band of roughnecks
to Kathy's left is a typical group of ESA hard-
cores from Rhode Island.
OUR MISTAKE: The photos of the O'Boy/TNT
Skate Shop series finale at Thrasherland in
the November 1988 issue were incorrectly.
credited to Brian Brannon. They were actually
taken by Michael Cornelius. The skater doing
a layback on page 84 was mistakenly iden
tified as Curt Baker. His name is Jeff Ariza.
We regret any sleepless nights these errors.
may have caused.
