skateboarders if I could help with anything, seeing as they were
in my front yard and all. They wanted me to go on a beer run.
What a coincidence! They were in the toasting mood too. They
called themselves Duncan, Mouse, Fish, Phelps, Croft, Street,
T-ed, Beau and Hawk. We hooted into the twilight, then they left
for their homes and hotels.
The next morning I woke up under the boards
they had built. I got up and headed over to King
Diner on 10th and Mission for some free eats. After
that, I wandered into the boundary of the fair itself.
This proved to be a bad choice because I found
a free ticket for the Zipper, one of those lousy-ass rides. I went
for it and wound up a perfect basket case, King Diner all over
the place. It was then that I decided to devote my time to watching
the master race of skateboarders do their thing.
I'm going to try to describe the course now. I can't rightly say
how they built the boards, but I can say they did a fine job on
'em. They even had 'em all freshly done up with
spray paints by the same street artists I seen tag-
gin' the walls around town. On the far end of the
pool there was a wide wall with a top steeper
than the rest of 'em. Shoot, it went straight
up! I guess you had to have a strong back

to be successful on that one 'cause whenever a rider would make
a pass on it and come down without ending up in a stack, the
audience got all worked up. Stickin' out at right angles from the
ends of the men's ramp were two other ramps. They reminded
me of this spillway where I used to hide out back in '43. They
also had slippery pipes on top on which the guys skimmed along
to get their aggressions out. In the middle of
the course were some bent ramps set up Evel
Kneivel style. Another ramp was real spacious.
It was a sloped wall where the guys would spin
all crazy, like they just downed a sixer or
something. Lastly, there was (Commued on page 110)
Cold kick-flipped on his home turf, Tommy busts on
a big bank.
OH NOTHING.
