JANE'S ADDICTION
Nothing's Shocking
Warner Bros., Lp
Striking a chord between Led
Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy and
the Bad Brains' I Against I, long
time L.A. fave Jane's Addiction
forges a hard-edged melange of
sounds. Ringing acoustic chords
swell suddenly to a hurricane of
guitars (e.g. "Ocean") with vocalist
Perry Farrell signaling each unex-
pected rollercoaster turn. By blend-
ing rock, funk, punk and blues,
Jane's Addiction has spawned their
own intense brand of soulful,
schizo-time-warp rock. With
numbers like the pummeling "Pigs
in Zen" and the haunting chords
of "Jane Says," the Jane's gang
shows that they have chewed up
and spit out decades of rock and
roll tradition. The end result is a
sound that's purely their own. MG
MISFITS
Walk Among Us
Ruby/WB, Lp
You don't care, do you? You don't
care about the politics and the
problems surrounding this release
or even if it's just a quick capitalist
venture aiming to score bucks on
a current cult. You don't care if this
is a good review or a bad review,
because a review of any kind is
press that sells and makes money.
You don't care that the press
release is the stupidest thing ever
written and that it doesn't reflect in
the least who the Misfits truly are.
You don't care if certain band
members were opposed to this and
that there are lawsuits pending. You
don't care that this was originally
released in 1983, the Misfits broke
up in 1984, and it's being re-
released because certain bands
have supported the Misfits, and
those bands are big, so "Let's cash
in on it all." All you care about is
that you can finally get the record
and you don't have to pay some
outrageous collector price. You're
happy, right? MH
THE SUN AND THE MOON
The Sun and the Moon
Geffen, Lp
Mark Burgess, vocalist, song-
writer and bassist of the Chame-
leons, has put his creative abilities
into a new project, The Sun and the
Bobby Gustafson of Overkill.
OVERKILL
Under the Influence"
Megaforce/Atlantic, Lp
FRANK WHITE
Overkill hasn't gotten the recognition it deserves yet. This band has been around for a long time, yet they
remain relatively unknown. Overkill whips up a frenzy with a crazed onslaught of head shaggin' thrash meets
molten metal which may be a bit too wild for the average public. Still, their power deserves respect. Bobby
Gustafson's omnipresent guitar work overlaps rhythms and leads in a continual barrage. Sometimes it's a
bit too much. Vocalist Bobby Ellsworth's high wail is vaguely similar to Udo D., though it too can be annoying.
On this release, Overkill seems headed in two directions. They lack total control, but their power and originality
make up for some of their shortcomings. MH
Moon. This album could almost be
the next Chameleons Lp, except
that the guitars don't have the same
haunting appeal. Mark's song-
writing is still catchy and melodic,
with a soulful dash of eerie charm.
The hypnotic power of his vocals
evoke shades of Peter Gabriel, The
Chameleons spirit lives on here
Strong numbers like "The Speed
of Life" and "House on Fire" give
a solid chunk of what moves The
Sun and the Moon. Also memor
able is mellower material like "A
Picture of England." Listen to the
album and I think you'll agree that
The Sun and the Moon is pro-
vocative and exhilarating, JS
PROUDFLESH
Powerbroker
Wired Gnome, Ep
Busting out of the ashes left by
the Crucifix volcano over four years
ago, lead singer Sothira's new pro-
ject is a devastating, harder-than-
hardcore record. If you thought
Crucifix rocked, you might not be
ready to take on this bulldozer
Powerbroker is spinning proof of the
phrase, "Once a rocker, always a
rocker." If you still need more of a
description, just put your head in-
side of a lit cannon and maybe
you'll understand. Look out! DO
7 SECONDS
Ourselves
Restless, Lp
Having made the transition from
melodious punk to a more laid back
sound, the latest release from Reno
standbys, 7 Seconds, is enjoyable
though occasionally disappointing
Despite criticism and comparison,
they've moved beyond an over-
blown U2 fascination and are on
track with their own unmistakable
sound. There's some strong
material on this disc, especially
"Escape and Run" and "Sister"
which both reflect the style of 7
Seconds' early experiments in
post-punk melodies. Vocalist/front-
man Kevin Seconds applies soar
ing nuances and harmonies which
greatly enhance some songs, like
the otherwise weakly constructed
"The Save Ourselves." A longstan-
ding problem with this outfit has
been their insistence on beating a
progression or riff into the ground
as in "Seven Years" a dull track
that would benefit from some varia
tion in its brooding snail's pace.
Otherwise, this is a strong musical
effort. Bassist Steve Youth works
four-string magic as Bobby Adams'
guitar provides the strongest ax
presence yet. Far from perfect.
Ourselves shows the growing pains
of a band eager to expand. MG
SHORT DOGS GROW
Matt Dillon
Rough Trade, Lp
I have one question about this
San Francisco based outfit's se-
cond effort. How can you not like
it? Without being pretentious, these
rockers (three guys and a girl) show
that they are hungry and able to
cook up a storm. The Dogs won't
settle for mainstream musical fast-
food, they prefer to dish out a
heapin' helpin' of harsh blues
straight from punk's soul kitchen.
Though you may detect a spicy hint
of Husker Dü, Soul Asylum or the
Replacements, this platter is made
from an original recipe. The whole
album rocks, with "Heart Pumping,
Bourbon" and "My House" star
ding out above the other selections
I'm not sure why or how they chose
the title, but I suppose its better
than "Leif Garrett." If you see this
record, buy it. You won't be
disappointed. DO
