So, are the Guns self-conscious bad boys
or hard-ass rockers? Unlike the teeming
hordes of L.A. hairspray wimps, Guns 'N'
Roses never lose sight of being a rock band
with loud as a way of life. Collective in-
fluences include Aerosmith, Alice Cooper,
the Sex Pistols. "We've never established
ourselves as anything in particular," snarls
Duff. "If someone called us a glam band,
we'd probably say fuck you. We're just a plain
and simple rock band. You see a lot of really
contrived rock bands in L.A. going for the
Whitesnake sound or the Crüe sound and
we're not all that pre-planned. We took our
own course and things have worked out well
so far. There was a Guns 'N' Roses with just
Slash and Stevie in the band when they were
just learning how to play, and it was a pretty
awful band. What we have now totally works."
The band is taking an unexpected acoustic
turn with their next release, an EP entitled
"The Sex, the Drugs, the Shocking Truth."
Half the disc features their long out of print
"Live Like a Suicide," first released in 1986
on their own Uzi Suicide label; the other half
features four acoustic tracks. Despite their
success, the Guns aren't resting on their past
laurels. The simple fact is that these L.A.
image breakers are still nearly as hungry and
hell bent as they were the day they formed.
"I don't have any money," complains Duff.
"It's amazing that we've sold so many
records and I'm only making about two hun-
dred bucks a week. I made that being a dish-
washer. People are always comparing us to
the Sex Pistols, but there ain't no swindle
happening here, I guess we'll see money
soon, though. Besides, money was never a
basis and it still isn't. When we were in San
