COLLECTION
QUEENSRYCHE
Operation Mindcrime
EMI-Manhattan
This selection of tunes was quite
shocking considering that Queens-
ryche's music hasn't done much for
me in the past. I expected the same
here, but was I surprised. The first
half of the fifteen tracks show a new
direction for this heavy metal band.
From the opening chords of
"Anarchy-X" to the first vocal dosage
in "Revolution Calling," the music is
packed with hot riffs and lots of
power. The music has harmony but
is forceful and electric. Where did
these lyrics come from? It's surpris
ing to hear intense, political writing
from such glamorous boys, yet here
it is. Some of the lyrics are more
street oriented, and others have true
political and philosophical signifi
cance. For example: "The rich con-
trol the government/The media the
law/To make some kind of dif
ference/Then everyone must know.
Eradicate the fascists/Revolution will
grow/The system we learn/We're
equal under law/But the streets are
reality/The weak and poor will fail/
Let's tip the power balance and tear
down their crown. from "Speak,"
which is full of good metallic leads.
Queensryche delivers a volley of in-
teresting musical selections for half
of the record. Then there's the se-
cond half. Oh well, it's a start. MH
ALL ABOUT EVE
All About Eve
Polygram/Mercury
All About Eve has finally put an Lp
out, and it is pleasantly sharp and
delightful. Julianne Regan's voice is
beautiful and forceful enough to
direct the melodies well. The music
melts under her shining singing
power. There are no raw edges on
this album. Tracks like "Flowers in
Our Hair" "Every Angel," "Martha's
Harbor," "Wild Hearted Woman" and
"In the Meadow" really capture the
atmosphere and pleasure of a happy
love song Fans of the Mission will
be pleased to see their involvement
and support here. Listening to All
About Eve's music is an enchanting.
highly personal experience. This is
a great release. JS
THE SUGARCUBES
Life's Too Good
Elektra
A creative remedy for musical bur
nout, the Sugarcubes provide a
brand of relief that isn't often heard:
interesting and imaginative scores
UNDERAN
The Abecedarians' Chris Manacke.
ABECEDARIANS
AB-CD
Caroline
This collection of thirteen tracks includes cuts from Abecedarians' first
Lp "Eureka," their second Lp "Resin" and their first release "Smiling
Monarchs," which was on the Factory label. Abecedarians provide a sound
which is dark, yet not too haunting, with full reverberating guitar and thick
bass strokes. The lyrical structure of Chris Manecke's vocals creeps along
through the musical composition and makes each song effective.
Abecedarians' later material gets a little dustier with more of a twang in the
guitar, but it still retains the power of darkness. While "Smiling Monarchs"
seems to be more of a New Order type dance tune, the other songs are
nowhere near that "progressive" and work much better. The uncanny sound-
track to the serious motion picture. JS
with a female vocalist whose tone
changes and sopranic ability send
shivers down your spine, and whose
pulled notes are rockin' goose-
bumps. Hailing from Iceland, the
Sugarcubes are a poppish mixture
of Siouxsie and the Banshees and
the Cocteau Twins with a healthy
dose of stylish savvy. You hear a
variety of harmonies based on
Bjork's vocals, with echoing male
backdrops and a chanting beat. This
is an innovative, high-quality produc
tion. Tracks like the easy "Birthday"
will bring the listener in, but it's the
cuts like "Traitor," "Delicious
Demon," "Coldsweat" and "Sick For
Toys" that provide truly pulsating
moments. The Sugarcubes will no
doubt receive rave reviews and
generate interest in the Icelandic
music scene. This is a fascinating
record that should be explored and
experienced. JS
MINOR THREAT
Minor Threat Live Video
Dischord
This is a solid two-camera
documentation of one of the final ap-
pearances of DC's finest. Filmed in
the summer of 1983 when the band
was in classic four-piece form, this
footage from an appearance at the

dedication and sense of humor that
marked this outfit. The camera work
could stand a bit more imagination,
but the band's raw power still comes
smoking through. lan MacKaye is the
focus of this video. His convictions
blaze to the forefront of his high-
intensity exaltations. The video
opens with a black and white Super-8
film clip with dubbed-in, bootleg-
quality sound from the band's
second show that provides a poign-
ant sense of perspective on later
glory days. A powerful look back at
a sadly missed old friend. MG
IGGY POP
Instinct
A&M
Last time around, the Ig brought
us Blah-Blah-Blah, a David Bowie
production featuring Steve Jones
(Pistols, Professionals, Chequered
Past) on a few of the better tracks.
Iggy chose Bill Laswell as master
producer of this album and Steve
Jones again on all guitars. The
songwriting, left to Pop/Jones, is
simple and up-front, but quite effec-
tive. It's the kind of stuff you want to
blast in your vehicle till the boom box
drums rattle the doors. Crank it on
your home stereo to hear the unreal
guitar sounds presented by Laswell
toying with Jonesy's Marshall stack
or (more likely) his rack-mount
Rockman. Iggy's new album is a
rocker and you should definitely
catch his act if you can. RS
STIFF LITTLE FINGERS
Live And Loud
Link Records
This is a two-record live album
from the reunited Stiff Little Fingers
As you read in Lance's article (Vol 8
#5), the band got together for seven
dates in the UK in 1987, five years
after they broke up. In this album,
from the London show, SLF retain the
speed and savvy of previous records
while proving that they can still shake-
it down. Performing songs written
between 1977 and 1982, the Fingers
do a great job after such a long
break. The quality of the recording
is suprisingly good, and contains
favorites such as "At the Edge,"
"Gotta Gettaway," "Alternative
Ulster" and a humorous parody of a
rap song called "No Sleep Till
Belfast. (Belfast, Ireland, is SLF's
hometown and the subject of many
of their early songs.) This record can
be found in the import section-it
you're lucky. Buy it, you'll love it. MO
