There are so many new com-
panies in the skateboard industry it's
hard to figure out who's coming and
who's going. The recent wave of
smaller companies are locked in a
make or break struggle, while the
more established ones are making
a steady profit. Think of the industry
as a private party. The big companies
don't need invitations because
they're already there, but the little
guys have a hell of a battle just to get
their foot in the door. The odds are
so stacked against the smaller guy
that no matter how good his concepts
and designs are, he's bound to go
down the drain without the right
breaks. This month's assortment of
gear is from smaller companies who
have their ideas and jobs on the line.
Blockhead Skates is not a new
company. They started selling decks
about four years ago and have since
gone through some beneficial
changes. When new companies
start, they often hire larger com-
panies to manufacture their equip-
ment. Such was the case with
Blockhead. The first decks they
marketed were made by Uncle Wigg-
ly. At the time, the epoxy-glass deck
was considered state of the art-
strong, light and durable for the
modern day street skater. Blockhead
has phased out their old stuff and
now makes a line of strong wood
decks that all should see. Their new
boards come in many different sizes
and shapes, which makes me think
they have something for everybody.
Here is a sampling of four boards in
their line: The Neon Circus is a
somewhat standard shape, with a
rounded tail and pointed nose. It
measures 30% "x9%" with 3% of
nose and 6½" of tail.
The Ron Cameron design is long
and thin with a triangular nose
design. It is 31%" long, 9%" wide,
has a 44" nose and a 6%4" tail. The
mini-Sam Cunningham is also of the
street genre with a blunt nose and
a wider hip area. These first three
seem to be more street oriented, but
then again that is up to the rider. The
mini-Sam is 29½" long and 9½"
wide with the same nose and tail as
the Neon Circus. As a departure from
the norm, they also make the Jim
Gray stretch model which is a total
cruiser at 34" long. All the boards
have the same concave, which may
not be the deepest but is consistent.
I think that the best feature is the
"foot well" tail that really holds your
rear foot in place. Any way you look
at it, they have high quality design,
materials and graphics. Also,
Blockhead now makes wheels called
Wild Things. While they look like a
copy of the ever popular OJ Team
Rider, they ride smooth and are pretty
fast. They are 62mm tall and have a
soft 92 durometer. The graphics
cover both sides of these reversible
I wheels for maximum rotation
mileage. Check out Blockhead pro-
ducts; I'm sure they have something
for you. Blockhead Skates, 102
Lincoln St., Roseville, CA 95678.
Next we have Dead Bolts, more
hardware with the Allen head twist.
The claim is that they are the "truck
bolts for an eternity." This is rather
extreme, but everybody's got an
angle. The package also comes with
a pocket wrench, which you must
have with you for adjustments,
despite the damage it might cause
if you fall on it. Dead Bolts, P.O. Box
2986 La Jolla, CA 92037.
Speeding into our office is
Motoboard International's very own
motorized skateboard. This unique
deck is powered by a forced air cool-
ed two-stroke 1.2 horsepower engine.
With a fuel capacity of 16 ounces, the
skater can cruise up to 15 miles on
one full tank. The Motoboard comes
complete with a 30"by 10" Madrid
deck, Venture trucks, and 70mm, 85
durometer Kryptonics wheels to keep
those roadway vibrations to a
minimum. The wheel base meas-
ured in at 26", with an overall length
of 36" from engine to nose. During
our test drive we were able to reach
a top speed of 28 m.p.h. The
Motoboard does not come with any
kind of braking system; however, as
the rider releases pressure on the ac-
celerator cable, the centrifugal clutch
slows the deck down to a near idle
speed. Although the Motoboard may
not be suited for ollies or boardslides,
it's a definite cruiser worth looking
into. Send two dollars for brochure
and info to: Motoboard International,
904-B Bayswater Ave, Burlingame,
California, 94010.
I saved the best for last. Schwax
Industries is way slick with it's new
Yikes Curb Wax. Buy yourself a
chunk of this silcone/wax substance,
wax up your favorite curb, bench or
handrail and "you will rip as you've
never ripped before," on slide 'n'
rolls, grinds, etc. This idea might
make someone a million bucks. I
don't know how much it costs, but try
it because you may like it.
Well, that's it. Write to me and I will
listen. Manufacturers, please send
equipment with statistics and maybe
retail prices. Bye, kids! Write to: Jake,
c/o THRASHER, PO Box 884570,
San Francisco, CA 94188-4570.
